Highlights from the Week
This week we went to the LRC for Mrs. Sayre to show us how to use an iPad app called Seesaw. Previously, we had completed three 3-digit addition problems and three 3-digit subtraction problems for our Unit 4 Real World Experience (RWE) in math. Students used a different strategy to work out each problem, then used Seesaw to present their thinking. Seesaw is a free app available on iOS and Android devices. It was fun! Pictures of them working are at the end of the newsletter.
Literacy
In Superkids this week our lessons focused on ways to spell the long o sound using: ow, oa, oe, old, ost and o with Super e. The Pattern words also included spellings with oan, one, ote, oat, oke, oak, ole, and oal. Each day there is an editing lesson for spelling, punctuation, and/or word usage. This week in our Word Work Book a paragraph was presented for the students to edit and write correctly. Author’s craft (which ties in with our Calkins writing) was presented by thinking hard to use descriptive words in writing. Finally, homonyms were reviewed again. The Lasting Lesson taught in the Superkids’ stories this week was the ability to be patient, without complaining, even when you have to wait a long time. How is your student doing in that regard?
In Cursive writing we learned the capital letters N, M, and V. A review packet was sent home in the Friday Folder.
We introduced one last form of poetry during our writing time this week - acrostic poems. We wrote Spring poems on kites to display on our hallway bulletin boards. The students were given free choice in the form of poetry they wanted to use for Spring. You can see their results during Open House.
Math
We charged ahead into unit 5, Geometry and Fractions, using Ten Marks, a new software program the district has purchased. Unit 5 includes naming shapes, their attributes and fractions ½, ⅓, ¼. In IXL students should work on completing the following sections:
Geometry
T1, T2, T4, T5, T6
Fractions
U1, U2, U3, U4, U5, U6, U7, U10
Star Student
This week's Star Student was Electra. Her favorite food is pizza, her favorite books are Goosebumps and Monster High, and she likes basketball. She also likes to color and is a good artist. Electra forgot to bring her show and tell with her today, so we will see those on Monday.
Our next and last STAR STUDENT is . . . Orlando !
AR Winners
We now have more students who making their AR goals. However, due to field trips and music programs this week, the LRC was not able to find a time to hand out prizes. Next week we should have a picture of a big group getting prizes. We hope to have a large group reach 250% of their goal, so that many can eat lunch with the teachers. Please continue to encourage your child to READ each night. GO READERS!
Miscellaneous Items
Read-a-thon forms are due on Monday.
If you haven’t handed in any unwanted pictures or picture payments, please do that Monday also.
Open House is Wednesday, May 4th from 6-7:30 p.m.
There is a flyer in the Friday folder about a Student Council fundraiser for Cystic Fibrosis. We have two students in our school with Cystic Fibrosis who made a little video explaining it to the students. It was very heartwarming. Several students immediately put change in our jar that they had in their backpacks. One student put in her milk money and said she didn’t need milk for today. Another student put in her school store money. It was SO heartwarming to see the class respond in such a giving way. If you can help with this fundraiser, it would be appreciated! It officially starts on Monday and will continue for two weeks. Thank you!!!
In addition, Student Council is collecting used books to sell at Open House to help with this fundraiser. Please bring the used books in by Tuesday.
On May 5th, the Woodridge School District 68 Bilingual Parent Advisory Committee (BPAC) will be hosting their first ever Multi-Cultural Event. Anchored around cinco de mayo, this event will showcase primary students reciting songs they have learned in class. A special presentation of a traditional Mexican Folkloric dance will be presented by an invited guest. Students of other cultures will also have work on display highlighting their culture and traditions.
