Welcome Back Mass TONIGHT at 7:00PM!
Greetings Everyone,
Welcome back! I hope each of you had a wonderful Christmas and a rest filled break. It is hard to believe that we are at the start of the spring semester already. It will not be long until we are busy with activities, assignments and projects. Our busyness at times can cause us to become lost in the "Nazareth bubble". We can become blind to and disconnected from the experiences and needs of others. Our country and the world are facing major challenges and divisions. Our faith reminds us, no matter how busy we are, we are always called to be active participants in the pursuit of equality, inclusion and justice for all.
Today the Catholic Church is commemorating the World Day of Migrants and Refugees and tomorrow our country, and our campus, will celebrate the life and legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Unfortunately, we continue to face severe issues of discrimination and violence in relation to race, religion, sexual orientation and war. We cannot use the busyness of our lives as an excuse to not be involved in helping make Dr. King's dream a reality. King's words continue to inspire people today, including Pope Francis. On a number of occasions, Pope Francis has quoted King and has stated how King has inspired him as pope.
In his address to the US Congress, Pope Francis said that he thought "of the march which Martin Luther King led from Selma to Montgomery fifty years ago as part of the campaign to fulfill his “dream” of full civil and political rights for African Americans. That dream continues to inspire us all. I am happy that America continues to be, for many, a land of “dreams”. Dreams which lead to action, to participation, to commitment. Dreams which awaken what is deepest and truest in the life of a people."
Now, none of us can say we are as busy as the pope! If Pope Francis can find the time to reflect and act, we can and must as well. Below you can find Pope Francis's homily for today and the details about tomorrow's events and activities on campus - just click the buttons directly below this box. Please make an effort to attend all or some of these events. As a reminder, classes are suspended from 10:30 to 12:30 tomorrow so everyone can attend the annual commemoration in Callahan Theater. This week, take time to reflect on what King's work is inviting you to discover and how are you being called to respond?
Peace,
~ JamieMark your calendars!!
