Where we are in place and time
An inquiry into orientation in place and time; personal histories; homes and journeys; the discoveries,explorations and migrations of humankind; the relationships between and the interconnectedness of individuals and civilizations, from local and global perspectives.

What have we been up to this Unit?
Math- Place Value
English Language Arts
Small Group Reading: Different students are working on different goals- In small group students are exploring goals like:
- Green Group: Read the text the way the author would (Fluency)
- Purple Group: Students are using prior knowledge to connect with the text (Comprehension)
- Orange Group:Students are working on identifying a meaning of a word by breaking the word parts down (like birdhouse- bird and house are easy and therefore we know what birdhouse means)- Expanding Vocabulary
- Yellow Group: Students are exploring the goal of Summarizing a text (Comprehension)
Vocabulary: Homework Due Date: March 20th (See managebac for more information) Students will be tested on this vocabulary at the end of our unit on
Class Read Aloud: "The Mouse and the Motorcycles' is coming along quite nicely- students have really enjoyed listening to the story of Mouse and the Motorcycle- students have been trying out our goal in their own reading of using character voices in their reading and when they are reading to friends. Some students have made connections to previous units as well as our current unit. this class gets really excited when we are able to read aloud- parents can try read aloud at home by selecting books their family is interested in and reading one chapter a night!.
Science and Social Studies
Students have been exploring earth and geography and they have demonstrate how different types of erosion and weathering occur to shape our earth. We also have been exploring technology and how technology has changed the way we communicate and travel adn how this has influenced our advancements as a society. Students will be finishing up their clay landforms and presenting them, collecting rocks and observing their attributes adn shapes and exploring weather through hands on experiences demonstrating weathering and erosion and how it changes their rocks. We have also been identifying and inqwuiring about the Prime Meridian and The Equator- where it is and what its purpose is.
Social Studies:
Students have worked to Identify the purpose and use of a globe and a variety of maps and atlases, such as school maps, neighborhood maps and simple atlases through exploring the different sources we find this information in. Students explored and used map elements, such as title, compass rose, and legend/key to interpret a map. We have been inquiring about the equator, poles, seven continents, four oceans, and countries on a map and globe and have idenitfied places we can use to find this information as a resource.
What to expect next......
- Finishing our exploration of geography and Changes in Earths surface.
- Finalizing our unit of inquiry into technolgical advances in communication and transportation.
- In math we will continue working in Module 5 with manipulating numbers and values to add and subtract using a variety of methods which will increase student understanding and strengthen deeper understanding of the 'How' and the 'Why' of math and not just the 'What'.
- In reading we are continuing to increase our vocabulary and working on our individual reading goals to become better readers through comprehension and accuracy while reading.
- We are working throughout the year on writing sequentially and walking through the writing process this unit our focus is using transitional words that demonstrate sequence such as First, Next, Then and Last. These words will show students how to order their writing so that it flows in a way that is easy for readers to understand.
UOI SUMMATIVE
- Our end of unit summative will be worked on in class this coming up week. We are demonstrating our understanding of what we have learned in a variety of areas- Please see managebac for a complete description and list of deadlines and expecations.
AQI
Students have been memorizing and understanding general themes of Surat
Al-Muzzammel.
Tajweed: Students are learning Hamzat Al-wasl and Hamzat Al-qati’I (همزة الوصل وهمزة القطع).
students have been reading Surat Al-Mulk for reading fluincy and to learn how to Apply the Tajweed rules.
Arabic:
Students have been learning how to compose sentences combining the place and the mode of transportationز

(I go to Egypt in a plane) أنا أذهب الى المدرسة بالسيارة
Islamic Studies:
Students have been learning about Prophet Muhammad’s(PBUH) Life, His marriage and his stay in the cave of Hira, The first revelation, the first believers and open call to Islam, In Akhlaq( Manners):
- The etiquette of Jumaa prayer.
- Treatment of parents (بر الوالدين).
Summative is going to take place this week inshaa Allah in class.
Art
Paper Quilling technique
Students developed their fine motor skills while observing how straight lines are shaped into spiral lines.
Intro to Arabic lettering
Students chose an Arabic letter and start practicing in their sketchbooks how to draw the shape of the letter and give it a thick form instead of only lines, students learned about how to keep the thickness uniform along the letter and how to create a balanced composition by centering the letter in the center of the paper and by ensuring that the size of the letter is not too small nor too big by following the rule " big enough but has enough space left around it". This is practice to prepare an Arabic letter to be decorated using the paper quilling technique.
Quilling final summative
Students ensured balance, and contrast to create interest and harmony. Students also showed appreciation to the shapes of the Arabic letters and how they can be decorated to create artworks.
