October Safety Drill
During the week of October 17, all teachers reviewed a powerpoint presentation with their students that teaches about our Tornado response procedures. Teaching in advance of the drill improves the drill experience. Later in week we will complete the drill required for the month to practice the procedures. This practice may adjust where each class would be assigned to go in the event of a tornado warning as the size of the classes fluxuates. It also refreshes Jeni and I on the messages we would use in the event of a tornado watch and warning.
Congratulations to the September Eagle Award Winners!
For the month of September Park Falls Elementary School emphasized the character trait "Being Respectful". Each classroom had one student who distinguished themselves as being "Respectful" for the month.

Making use of the additional time in Mr. Patterson's Day
Mr. Patterson is seeing 38 kids either individually or in small groups. These children are from nearly all the classrooms in our building. He is working to group the children more in the future as he currently has 71 sessions running every 6 days. The additional time allocated to his school counseling has resulted in a significant increase in his work with the emotional needs of our students. He has also joined our PBIS team and has been responsible for support in communications for our PBIS programming. This is in addition to the classroom lessons in his daily schedule and other duties.
Fresh Fruits and Vegtables
Our FFV program is running smoothly and providing and introduction and experience for children with a variety of fruits and vegetables. While the program does provide a snack, educating children about and introducing them to varied fruits and vegetables is the primary intent of the program. Dana Miesbauer handles all the ordering and preparation in the kitchen and forwards links to educational materials for teachers to use in their classrooms to help children learn more about the foods.
I will say that Jicama received mixed reviews at best on the first look. But, as we know, appreciating new tastes sometimes takes more than one attempt! Isabella Rabueliman from Mrs. Miller's 4k classroom might need more than one or two tries to appreciate the Jicama!
Supporting Excellent Bus Behavior
Bus expectations has been a significant point of emphasis this year across the district. Our three expectations are:
- Have your pockets on the seat
- Have your feet facing forward and on the floor (if they reach)
- Voice volume is 2, 1, or 0
Some of the steps that we have taken to support the drivers in their efforts to manage student behavior include repeating these expectations two - three times weekly on the announcements, I did a ride along with one student to support learning bus expectations, special education staff completing social stories with bus expectations for specific kids, I have sat with specific students for a minute or two during loading to teach the expectations, and given Eagle Tickets for good behavior on the bus.
We have also removed two students from the regular route buses and provided transportation on an alternate bus because of significant and persistent behavioral problems in unstructured settings. A third student was suspended from their bus route for three trips as a result of misbehavior. These things are occuring differently now than in the past because of improved communication and support from Mr. Cronan.
On Monday, October 17th, I asked the drivers how their routes were going. Two of the seven Park Falls home route bus drivers and indicated they were improving but still need to be better. The other five said their routes were excellent! The North Campus shuttle drivers reassigned students to the buses, mixing ages, and have since reported excellent behavior.
