Dyslexia Update
Did you know that every student that is diagnosed with Dyslexia has a subscription to Audio Books?
These audiobooks are available through Learning Ally at https://learningally.org
Audiobook technology helps students distinguish letters and letter patterns that form words. Hearing real people read builds oral fluency and cuts down reading time, while students improve vocabulary and comprehension. Students have the satisfaction of reading independently, which increases their self-esteem, and success in school.
Students can download books anywhere, anytime onto their personal, online bookshelf, which can be accessed with or without internet access both at school and at home 24/7. The Learning Ally Audiobook Solution is compatible with PCs, Macs, Chromebooks, Android and iOS devices.
Usernames and Passwords can be found on your students Dyslexia Progress Report, or email kreyhons@lcisd.org
Testing tips for the Spring
Testing Tips for the Spring
Testing is simply part of a students educational experience. It's their time to show what they know simply on one given day.
- Get plenty of rest during the week of testing
- Eat a good breakfast
- Prepare a water bottle and one small snack (pretzels, dry cereal, grapes, nuts, Goldfish, etc.) the night before the day of the assessment
- To save time in the morning, set out a set of clothes the night before
- Start the morning in a positive manner with encouraging words of endearment
- Arrive on campus a bit early for some relaxation time
- It is recommended that cell phones and iWatches be kept at home on state testing days. Should you feel your child must bring a cell phone, then it will be secured by your child’s homeroom teacher during the assessment or left in your child’s backpack turned off as to not cause a distraction.
Parents can help by reassuring their child, they are ready and prepared for the assessment. Encourage your child to use their strategies taught to them by their teachers and to work diligently through the entire assessment. Some problems or questions may be more difficult than others but to keep trying their best!
Please avoid scheduling appointments on testing dates.
Calling all Parents/Guardians!
In a world where it's easy to get caught up in the negatives, let's take a moment to shine a light on the positives. Mrs. Frazier invites you to join us in celebrating the incredible teachers and staff members who go above and beyond to make a difference in the lives of our Texans and the community.
Please take a few minutes to complete a short survey sharing your stories of how a teacher or staff member at Jane Long Elementary has positively impacted you, your family, or the community as a whole. Your feedback will help us recognize and appreciate those who dedicate themselves to fostering a supportive and enriching environment for our students.
Together, let's spread some positivity and gratitude throughout our school community. Click the link below to share your story and help us recognize the everyday heroes at Jane Long:

Alternate Morning Drop off plan for inclement weather
In the event of inclement weather we will reroute all car riders under the bus porch cover so that they can exit safely and avoid getting wet. Please understand that this may cause delays and we ask for your patience during this process.
Parents still have the option to walk their students in the front of the school but there will be limited staff at the front of the school.
If you have any questions or concerns please contact me at Amey. Frazier@lcisd.org.
Thank you for your support in providing the safest care possible to our Texans.
Student Safety to Prevent Unauthorized Entry
Dear Jane Long Families,
As your principal, I remain committed to the safety and security of our campus and would like to request your cooperation and support with our students, which includes some important reminders about our visitor check-in process and consequences for failing to adhere to these procedures.
It’s important to understand that the visitor check-in process is in place to safeguard the well-being of everyone within our school community. Allowing unauthorized individuals into the school or using the wrong entrance poses a potential risk to the safety of our students and staff. All campus visitors must check-in at the campus front office. Throughout the building, all students and staff members must have their badge visible and should also use primary entrances.
Recently, it has come to our attention that some students are violating the visitor check-in process and allowing individuals to enter the campus through side doors and back doors. Beginning on Wednesday, January 3, 2024, any student permitting individuals into the school without proper check-in or through the wrong door will face disciplinary consequences, which will result in a three-day out-of-school suspension and/or other measures deemed necessary by campus administration.
To maintain a safe and secure learning environment for all, we kindly request your support in reinforcing these security measures with your student. Please contact me at amey.frazier@lcisd.org .if you have any questions or concerns. We appreciate your partnership in upholding our safety standards.
Thank you for your immediate attention to this matter.
Sincerely,
Amey Frazier
Principal
Estimadas Familias de Jane Long
Atentamente,
Amey Frazier

Monitoring social media use
Good afternoon Long Families,
As your Principal, my goal is to create a partnership with each of you that promotes your student’s education, social/emotional behaviors, and character. To accomplish this goal effectively and prevent rumors from spreading, it’s important that you hear from me directly about an ongoing situation that is occurring at our campus.
Campus administrators have received multiple reports about fake social media pages on TikTok that use our campus name and logo. These accounts are created by students and misrepresent our campus community.
Our campus administrators and police have started an investigation. Students involved in creating and promoting these pages will be disciplined in accordance with the Student Handbook.
We remain committed to providing a secure and conducive learning environment for everyone. If there is ever an emergency or a credible concern for student safety, parents will be notified.
We urge you to remind your student(s) that if they hear or see anything that could threaten the safety of our school learning environment to tell an adult as soon as possible—nothing is too small.
Additionally, please closely monitor student's social media activity and be vigilant about the content they are exposed to. What works for families will vary, but here are a few tips:
1. Monitor your student(s) cell phones for messaging/application activity.
2. Remind your student(s) there can be serious consequences for inappropriate behavior when posting online.
3. Encourage students to report inappropriate content to an adult, administrator, or officer.
Our only verified social media account is on Facebook, so you can follow us by clicking HERE. Please email me at Amey.Frazier@LCISD.org if you have any questions or concerns.

Notes from the nurse...
NOTES FROM THE NURSE
IF YOUR CHILD IS SICK:
v Children must be free of fever (less than 100.0 degrees) for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medications (such as Tylenol or Advil / Motrin) before returning to school. Children must be free of diarrhea for 24 hours before returning to school and need to be eating and drinking without any problem. If a child vomits two or more times within 24 hours, they will need to stay home for at least 24 hours to ensure they are not contagious.
v Please call the school nurse if your child has been diagnosed with a contagious condition such as pink eye, strep throat, chicken pox, head lice, impetigo, ringworm, flu or has vomiting and/or diarrhea.
MEDICATIONS:
Children are NOT PERMITTED to carry medication including cough drops. Over the counter medication for less than 6 weeks must be accompanied by a LCISD form from the parent authorizing administration of the medication, reason, dose, time, and amount. Parents MUST DELIVER the medication to the clinic and bring only the necessary amount for school. ALL medication must be in the original container. All prescription medication must be in the original pharmacy container with the child’s name, medication date and dosing instructions. A second bottle from the pharmacy can be requested from the pharmacy by the parent for the school clinic. Medications such as antibiotics for 3 times a day or every 8 hours are to be given at home. Just follow a before breakfast, after school and before bedtime schedule.
*There are to be no "stock medications" in the clinic such as Tylenol, Motrin, Tums, etc.
FOOD ALLERGIES:
Food allergies can be life threatening. Provide written medical documentation, instructions, and medications as directed by a physician, using the Food Allergy Action Plan as a guide.
IMMUNIZATIONS:
Texas Department of Health requires all school age children to be up-to-date on immunizations. Children are excluded from school until the required immunizations are obtained and a copy is given to the school nurse. Contact school nurse with questions.
CLOTHING:
ALL students must always have a change of clothes on campus to avoid nurse having to call to request a change of clothes from parent/guardian.
MISCELLANEOUS:
Many headache and stomachache visits to the clinic can be due to students not eating breakfast/lunch and/or not drinking enough water. To assist, please provide your child with a healthy, daily snack and a water bottle.
v Please go to www.lcisd.org to Long Elementary, select ABOUT and then NURSE’s NOTES where medical information can be located, including required district forms.
Morning arrival guidelines
- Do not drop students prior to 7:15am as there is no staff on duty at that time.
- Do not drop students in the parking lots and have them walk across without an adult. This is extremely unsafe. If you are crossing please walk to the white crosswalk and wait traffic comes to a standstill before attempting to cross.
- Do not pull on the side street in front of the C building and release students across the street without and adult. You must walk them across the street.
Afternoon car rider dismissal guidelines
- Make sure your car rider number is visible on your mirror or the dashboard until your student is in the car. This helps to speed up the line movement.
- Please adhere to the map when entering the line. If parents are skipping the line this is extremely unfair to the people who have entered the correct way.
- If you are unsure of the correct route entry please see the attached map below or feel free to call the school for clarification.
Chain of command for addressing parent concerns
We know that from time to time there will be conflicts and concerns that you need to address with the campus. The first step to any concern within the classroom is to contact the teacher directly and set up time to discuss.
Administrators and front office staff will ask you if you have talked to the teacher first and allow them the opportunity to discuss concerns first.
IF resolution is not made at the teacher level, please then contact Mrs. Spano. Assistant Principal. She will conduct investigations, find you the answer you may need and address all concerns.
If you are not satisfied with the results, Mrs. Frazier will gladly assist. For non-emergencies, the school counselors would a the best starting point for support. We will not change classroom schedules of any kind if you haven't followed the campus procedures for conflict with a teacher.
Thank you for adhering to this practice and procedure.
Breakfast and Lunch guidelines for visitors
- All visitors must bring their license to and be checked in through the raptor system. You must wear your badge on your chest area so that it is visible to staff.
- The breakfast line will be cut off at 7:40am to ensure that students are in class by 7:45am to begin their instructional day. Students who arrive to school by bus after 7:40am will be allowed to eat breakfast. If you drop off your student via car rider it is best to have them at school between 7:15am-7:30am so they can eat breakfast and be in class on time.
- You are only allowed to sit with your child during breakfast or lunch.
Late arrivals
Tardies are recorded in individual attendance data for each child, and interventions are made when necessary. Arriving late and checking a child out early is a loss of instructional time and will be considered during Attendance Review Committee Meetings.

HIGHLIGHTS
Technology Devices
Personal Technology Lamar CISD believes that appropriate use of students’ technology devices enhances our students’ education. Students may be asked to bring their own device to school. This includes but is not limited to: cell phones, smart phones, iPods, iPads, electronic tablets, and laptop computers. Students may use devices in class at the teacher’s discretion. Students must follow teacher, campus, and district rules and guidelines for use.
(Campus Guideline: All electronic devices stated above, including Smart Watches, must remain in the student's backpack turned off during the instructional day unless the teacher allows the student to use the device for an assignment.)
Compulsory Attendance Law
Excused Absences for Compulsory Attendance
State law allows exemptions to the compulsory attendance requirements for several types of absences if the student makes up all work. The District shall excuse a student from attending school for the following purposes:
- Religious holy days
- Required court appearances
- Activities related to obtaining United States citizenship
- Health-Care Appointments*
- For students in the conservatorship (custody) of the state
- TAPS at Military Funeral
- Parent, Stepparent, or Legal Guardian who is an active-duty member of the uniformed services leaves for active duty
- Personal Illness**
- Death/Funeral of an Immediate Family Member
- Quarantine Absences for a student who is required to quarantine will be excused with written documentation from a medical physician or the school nurse.
*Documented health-care appointments for the student or a child of the student, including absences related to autism services shall be excused, if the student returns to school on the same day of the appointment and brings a note from the health-care provider. A consultation over the phone or via video (telemedicine) is considered an appointment with a health care professional. However, an appointment with a school nurse does not count as an appointment with a health care professional.
**When a student is absent from school due to personal illness, the student upon return, or within 5 days of returning to school, must submit a note signed by a parent giving the date(s) and describing the reason for the absence.
Unexcused Absences
If an absence does not meet the criteria for an excused absence, the absence will be considered unexcused for attendance accounting purposes. Examples of unexcused absences includes, but are not limited to the following:
- Any absence without required documentation.
- Family trips/vacations, reunions, weddings, parent business trips.
- Non-school sponsored activities.
- Private lesson or tutoring.
- Religious retreats, camps, mission trips, and individual rites other than a religious holy Day.
- Non-enrollment days – These are days that a student is not in school due to transferring to another LCISD campus or alternative placement.
ABSENCE NOTES:
Parent notes may be sent by email but must come from a parent’s verified email account. The note or email must be sent to the campus attendance clerk. Excuse notes turned in after 5 days are subject to approval by the campus principal. An excessive number of absences will be referred to the Campus Attendance Review Committee (ARC). If a student is absent 5 consecutive school days or more, a doctor’s note is required within 5 days of the student’s return to school for the absence to be excused.
MAKE-UP WORK:
It is critical for students to work with teachers when they return from an absent from school so that assignments can be completed.
COSAS IMPORTANTES

Thank you for your support!
Amey Frazier
Estimado padre/tutor,
Atentamente,
Amey Frazier

Smart Tags
Ensuring the safety and security of the students riding on buses is our highest priority. To facilitate and support this safety initiative the District has implemented the Smart Tag system to promote and ensure a positive school bus riding experience for all Lamar CISD students. Students are issued Smart Tag ID cards with an electronic chip Smart sensor (please do not modify the ID cards, or place holes in the card). The student’s name is printed on the front of the card, and there is no student information stored on the card.
Students must have one or more Transportation Release Guardians listed within the students Smart Tag Parent Portal.
To ensure the safety of the children, parents/guardians or an authorized person is encouraged to be at the bus stop each day when their child is picked up and dropped off.
- Drivers will only release a student to approved guardians at the stop and must be in possession of a picture ID so the driver can verify release authorization via the Smart Tag system. If a driver is unable to verify release authorization the student will be returned to campus.
- Parents must register this information within their students Smart Tag profile via the
- Smart Tag Parent Portal.
- Parents are also responsible for keeping the information current.
- Parents/guardians and children should know their route number, school name, and stop location.
- Students in Kindergarten MUST be received by an adult, parent, or authorized receiver at the designated bus stop and designated time. This could be an older sibling.
- Parents should be at the stop ten (10) minutes prior to bus arrival.
- Individuals receiving a KG student from a bus, will need to be in possession of a picture ID so the driver can verify release authorization via the Smart Tag system. If a driver is unable to verify release authorization the student will be returned to campus.
- Should there be no one at the stop to receive a KG student, the child will be taken back to the school for the parent to pick up.
- Should this occur more than twice in a semester, the third occurrence may result in the child losing bus riding privileges.

Early pickup/Transportation changes/ Transportación y salida temprana
If you take your child out of school before dismissal time, you will need to report to the office to sign him/her out. Your child will stay in the classroom until you arrive. If it necessary for someone other than the parent/guardian pick up your child, that person must be signed, dated note with the child. The person picking up your child must show photo identification to the office staff. Accumulated time of early pick-ups is calculated by minutes in lost instruction time. Request to check out your child must be done prior to 2:40 pm.
Any changes in the normal transportation of your child must be stated in writing with a parent/guardian signature. We ask for everyone's help in not making changes frequently. However, we understand that in rare cases, unexpected changes will need to happen. These can be called in to the front office by 2:15 pm. We are not able to process changes after 2:40pm . This includes parents that come to the campus without prior notice to pick up their child. Any change in transportation arrangements for any student requires a note to the teacher. Make sure you write your child's first and last name, teacher's name and indicate the date(s) for the change and how the child is going to go home. We ask that the parents not email the change since there maybe times that a teacher is not in attendance or does not have a chance to read their email.
Please note on early release days the latest you can pick up is 11:00 am!
