Required Daily Attendance Form and Office Hours (Formulario de asistencia diaria será requerido y horas de oficina)
As mentioned on Wednesday, starting TOMORROW, MONDAY, students are required to submit a daily attendance form by 10 am. Please review the slides or PDF below so you are familiar with the procedures. If you prefer, you can watch the video that explains the new required procedures and attendance form. Please complete the form daily and do not complete the form the night before. Here is the link for the attendance form. (Thank you to Mrs. Leonardo and Mr. Camarena who spent some of their Saturday creating the slides and video).
To help this become a routine we will be sending out an email to the students each morning with the link as a reminder. We will also send a reminder to families via text and email. The link is also on the Kennedy website (directions are in the PDF, Google slides, and video, to show you where to find it). The form can be completed from a cell phone. If for some reason there are technical difficulties you can call the main number and leave a message, 650-482-2409. We need the student’s first and last name, grade, and first period teacher.
Also mentioned on Wednesday, starting this week students need to attend each teacher’s office hours at least once. Students, you can spread this out and attend 1-2 per day to make it easier. This will give you a chance to connect with teachers, ask questions, get help with assignments, etc. Below is the office hours schedule. The actual links for the office hours can be found in your teachers’ Google Classrooms.
Updated Assignments (Asignaciones actualizadas)
The teachers’ assignment sheets have been updated for this week. A reminder that on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week and then the next two weeks after, teachers have mandatory professional development. This means they will be unavailable during morning office hours and the number of assignments will be reduced. Teachers with 11 am office hours may be a tiny bit late on Tuesday and Wednesday if the training goes right until 11.
Virtual Field Trip This (Excursión virtual este jueves)
Mark your calendars! We are going on another virtual field trip next week! Thursday, April 30, at 1 pm to Point Lobos.
Join me as our guide, Daniel, kayak paddles above the kelp forest in Whalers Cove on the Pacific Ocean! We will take an up close look at kelp, learn about it and some of the animals that depend upon it, and hopefully see some of the animals too! We’ll discuss the human impact on this area and what we are doing today to protect this place. There will also be time for student questions as well. If ocean conditions aren't good for this, the program will be from the cypress forest overlooking the kelp in Whalers Cove. Please email me if you would like the field trip link.
Here is a short clip of a curious seal from Whalers Cove where we will be going on our field trip. The attachment below has more resources to learn about Point Lobos and the kelp forest. Thank you to Kennedy parent, Isela Castaneda, for sharing some virtual field trip resources with me. I hope we will be able to take a virtual field trip together every week or two.
For 6th and 7th graders who want to challenge their math placement for next year, this will still be an option at the end of May even though we will not be at school. More details will be coming soon.
6th graders who do qualify will be required to complete summer work to make up for the 7th grade curriculum they missed this year. 7th graders who qualify will have to take two math courses concurrently next year, 8th grade math and Algebra. The extra math class will replace their elective class.

Planning For Next School Year (Planificación para el próximo año escolar)
We are already starting to plan for the next school year with the limited information we have. We do know class sizes have to be smaller due to social distancing, we won’t be able to have large events (or at least early on), and school could include some of the following: staggered start times, alternating A/B schedules, and online at-home learning. Once we have more information we will share it with you.
Next Sunday in the Cougar Connect I will be including our 2020-2021 elective catalogue. We are still trying to figure out if we can have students select their courses using PowerSchool or if we will need to use a Google Form, so that will not be included next weekend.

Cell Phone Problem
Answer is: 12/23
METHOD 1: Find the smallest possible class.
In this class, the numbers of girls and boys who have cell phones are equal. Since 3 out of every 4 girls and 2 out of every 5 boys have cell phones, the number of girls and boys each must be a multiple of both 2 and 3. Because 6 is the least common multiple of 2 and 3, the smallest possible class would have 6 girls and 6 boys with cell phones. Then 3 out of 4 girls is equivalent to 6 out of 8 girls and 2 out of 5 boys is equivalent to 6 out of 15 boys, so the smallest possible class would have 8 girls and 15 boys. Combining, 12 out of 23 students overall have cell phones. That is 12/23 of the whole class.
METHOD 2: Make fraction diagrams
Figure 1 shows 3/4 of the girls in the class.
Figure 2 shows 2/5 of the boys.
Figure 3 shows that the number are equal (i.e. overlapped completely) We need to further divide the girls' diagram to show 6 overlapped pieces and further divide the boys' diagram to also show the same 6 overlapped pieces.
Figure 4 shows separating the overlapped rectangles into a girls' rectangle and a boys' rectangle.
In figure 4 there are 6 + 6 = 12 equal size pieces representing those with cell phones and 8 + 15 = 23 equal size pieces representing all students. 12/23 of the whole class have cell phones.
Sandwich Problem
Answer: 24 combinations of sandwiches
You can use something called the Fundamental Counting Principle to solve this quickly. (2 types of bread x 4 types of protein x 3 types of cheese, 2 x 4 x 3 = 24).
You can also list out the combinations or make a tree diagram like the one seen below.
Problema Sandwich
New Puzzles For This Week (Nuevos rompecabezas para esta semana)
Can you figure out the hidden meaning/phrase of the pictures below?
News From The Community (Noticias de la comunidad)

Redwood City School District (RCSD) has streamlined and improved its school meal distribution process as it balances safety for both families and employees with continuing to provide this essential service.
Meals at Ford, Garfield, Hoover, and Roosevelt Sites
Serving days will be on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays only.
On Wednesday of every week, families will be able to also pick up meals for Thursday and Friday at the same time as the sites will be closed Thursdays and Fridays.
The meals that will be provided will continue to be breakfast and lunch.
The schedule will continue to be 10:30 to 11:30 am.
All families will need to continue complying with staff to maintain their physical distance.
Any child who is under 18-years old can get food. The child does not need to be a student in RCSD and does not need to be present anymore per a waiver from the USDA.
Frozen entrees will continue to be provided as drive-thru brown bags, which means families can pick them up and take them home to heat up.
As a reminder, families are asked not to park or get out of their cars as staff will be out front ready with the meals to be picked up. Families just need to pop the trunk and staff will place the meals in the trunk.
