Principal's Message
Good afternoon, RMS families!
Welcome back from spring break! We truly hope the week away from school was rejuvenating and refreshing for all… and that we’re rested and ready for the last ten weeks of the school year, weeks that will fly by until we arrive in June.
This week back will be one of transitioning back into the mid-semester with the midterm grading period fast approaching next Friday. As we head into the final stretch of the school year, we’ll spend some time this week and next revisiting behavior and academic expectations. We’ll also reference this supportive message– and show it in House– from our two amazing counselors: Kelly Ayres and Lee Baker
As we’ll do in our classrooms, we encourage you also to have conversations with your students about how they want to be and act and achieve in these last weeks before summer. In the spring, our 8th grade students begin to plan in earnest for high school– incoming 9th grade meeting at SEHS this week on Thursday evening at 6:00 pm!-- our 7th grade students look for leadership opportunities for next year and our 6th grade students pave the path for the next group of incoming students. Community, belonging and kindness will remain our themes for the spring and we look forward to taking a collective deep breath and pushing ever forward to June.
Next week and beyond kicks off CORE week at RMS with some fun activities related to Community and Respect, Organization, Responsibility, and Effort. This will include House activities, reflections and connections. More details to follow; be sure to ask your student about it. Following CORE week, we will have another week of lessons about what it means to be an upstander and give students some specific tools they can use to step in when and if they witness bullying, harassment, or other aggressions related to race, gender, ethnicity or other forms of identity. We’ll share our resources with families, too!
After this, we’ll be on to preparing for state testing with an eye towards a modified schedule the week of May 6 - 10 for morning testing and afternoon classes. More information to follow soon and if you are planning on opting your students out of testing, please click here for required forms. May will bring a beautiful season of middle school track and field and time to prep for 8th grade Promotion. Please see below for additional information as 8th grade students begin an important period of transition.
We wish you a quiet and calm week back after break and look forward to seeing our students with spring energy and excitement.
Our best,
Courtney + Mike

OSAS and SEED Survey in One Month!
Roosevelt will deliver state tests the week of May 6 - 10. Please prepare for shortened instructional days– testing in the morning and classes in the afternoon– on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday that week. Wednesday will be a regular early release day.
Roosevelt uses OSAS test results to help us consider interventions and directions with our curriculum. While OSAS is not the only way in which we measure student growth and classroom assessments remain the most effective way to consider student progress, it is data we consider when writing school-wide goals and plan for improvements. We respect parents’ decision to opt students out and wanted to also share with you when and how we use the data. Thanks for considering this perspective!
In addition to OSAS testing, Oregon will also deliver the SEED Survey this year– the Student Educational Equity Development Survey. This survey is intended to gather information about the educational experiences of students in Oregon. The Oregon Department of Education will then allocate resources and supports for districts where they are most needed.
You can read about the SEED Survey here. Please use this form if you wish to opt out your student. You can drop a signed form by the front office or email it to Kellie Salinas: salinas_k@4j.lane.edu. Paper copies are available in the front office for pick up.
