Tiger Paws Parent Newsletter No.5
This is a bi-weekly update for Ballard Hudson parents.
P.A.W.S. at BHMS
The school year is well underway and we have a lot of exciting intiatives occuring this school year. We are placing a huge focus on student behavior the next few months because we realize that students must come to school and behave appropriately if learning is to take place.
We need students to understand that blatant disrespect and fighting are not acceptable
behaviors and will not be tolerated at BHMS. We need your support with this parents. Please speak with your child and help him/her to understand the reason why you send them to school everyday and that their education is important. We must have an environment that is conducive to learning every day. In addition, please explain to them that riding the bus is a privilege not a right and they must behave on the school bus as well in order to be allowed to ride the bus.
We have built into our calendar PBIS (positive behavior intervention and supports) rewards and recognition for those students who are consistently doing the right thing. Our PBIS initiative at BHMS asks students to exhibit the PAWS way. P.A.W.S. stands for Positive Behavior, Academic Achievement, Willingness to Learn, and Strength of Character. As a part of PBIS, we have a monthly PBIS celebration that is based on school attendance and behavior and teachers reward students who are doing the right thing daily with PAWS tokens. The tokens can be redeemed at the school store for cool prizes. In addition, each team that remains fight-free for the week will earn a PBIS break on Thursdays. Our goal is to purposefully recognize those students who consistently do the right thing during the school day by letting them know that we appreciate them. We will continue to come up with ways to recognize the students who are exhibiting the PAWS way.
With that stated, we still have a few students who are constantly disrupting the learning environment. We are developing a plan to provide an alternative form of education for those students and will be meeting with both the students and their parents soon to inform the of what the next steps will be for them. Again, we ask that you please encourage your students to be a part of the solution and not a part of the problem.
Thank you in advance for your support.
BHMS Goals for 2019-2020
- Improve the climate and culture at BHMS.
- Increase student attendance at BHMS.
- Increase student achievement at BHMS.
- Decrease student discipline issues at BHMS.
Parents, we ask that you assist us in reaching these goals by ensuring that your child comes to school everyday unless he/she is truly sick, reviewing our student handbook and reinforcing the expectations that we have for your child, and reviewing your child's agenda each night to ensure that homework assignments are complete. In addition, we ask that you have your child read 20 minutes each night at home. Increasing our students' reading and comprehension is a focus for the year and the more students are exposed to text the better their literacy skills will become.
Thank you in advance for your assistance in helping us meet these goals.
Please help us by getting your child to school on time.
