Educating every child for confidence today and contribution tomorrow.
A Message From the Principal
DHES Families,
We are gearing up for the Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA) and Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science (WCAS) which will take place in the month of May. Our 4th and 5th graders will get the opportunity to “show what they know” on these state required assessments. Both 4th and 5th graders will take the SBA in Math and ELA. 5th graders will also be taking the science assessment. Students will complete these assessments on certain mornings. Please see the DHES Assessment Calendar for the days your child’s class will be testing. It will be very important to be on time and ready to shine on those days. Please try to avoid making appointments on testing days as well. Students are frequently more successful when they test in their typical environment on the normally scheduled days. Thanks.
Have a great weekend!
Kevin Anderson, Principal

From the School Nurse
It's Allergy Season!
Tree pollen is in the air! We are in the thick of tree pollen season (Feb-April) and will soon be
moving into grass pollen season (May-July). Weed pollen is present May-August or later.
If your student is allergic to trees, grasses, or weeds, it may be helpful during allergy season to
give them a 24-hour antihistamine, such as loratadine (Claritin), fexofenadine (Allegra) or
cetirizine (Zyrtec) every day during their allergy season. During spring and early summer,
students with allergies come to the health room after recesses and outdoor PE with sneezing,
itchy swollen eyes, and sometimes with hives or asthma. These students may benefit from a
daily antihistamine after consulting with your student’s health professional. Coughing,
especially if it wakes your student during the night, may be a sign of asthma.
Some people need several medications to manage their allergies. In addition to a 24-hour
antihistamine, additional over-the-counter or prescription medications may be needed to
adequately manage symptoms. If a daily antihistamine isn’t enough, please see your health care
professional. With proper management of allergies, it is possible to reduce or even eliminate
those miserable symptoms.
