Building Thinking Classrooms
in Mathematics

The simple goal--to increase the number of students thinking, and to increase the number of minutes during which they were thinking. Peter Liljedahl knew that a thinking student is an engaged student, and an engaged student is more likely to be a student who not only learns, but retains what they learn, and can build on and apply what they learn to new situations.
Student difficulty with mathematics has been a pervasive and systemic problem since the advent of public education--not because students can't learn mathematics, but because, by and large, students can't learn it by being told how to do it. There has been a concerted effort to change this reality by transitioning to more progressive and student-centered pedagogies. And progress has been made. Yet, something is still missing. Systemically, we are still struggling with high failure rates, low self-efficacy, and massive student disengagement.
Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics is the culmination of 15 years of research, led by Dr. Liljedahl, in which he worked with over 400 K-12 teachers to try to break through any and all institutional norms to get students to think about mathematics.
Through this research, Peter and his colleagues deeply examined a comprehensive list of considerations, organized around the 14 factors that make up the core of every teacher's practice. And within these factors, he looked for--and found--the optimal practices for thinking when teaching and learning mathematics in any grade K-12. Peter then organized these practices into the Building Thinking Classrooms Framework.
Peter Liljedahl will join us virtually on October 25th from 12:30pm - 2:30pm to share more about this framework and how it positively impacts student engagement and learning outcomes.
Learning Outcomes
- Participants will learn about the research behind the Building Thinking Classrooms Framework.
- Participants will be introduced to the 14 practices in the Building Thinking Classrooms Framework.
- Participants will gain strategies to increase student engagement in the mathematics classroom.
This workshop is offered at no additional cost to those districts participating in Universal School Improvement Services (Discount will be automatically applied.) including: Abbotsford, Bloomer, Bruce, Chippewa Falls, Colby, Eau Claire, Eleva-Strum, Flambeau, Gilman, Gilmanton, Granton, Greenwood, Ladysmith, Lake Holcombe, Loyal, Mondovi, Neillsville, New Auburn, Osseo-Fairchild, Owen-Withee, Spencer, and Thorp.
The cost for all other participants will be $500 per workshop.
