Thoughts for March
Dear Falcons,
As we enter March, I am filled with a sense of anticipation and excitement for the month ahead. March is a time of transition, with winter slowly giving way to spring, and I believe it mirrors the growth and transformation we see in our students each day. This month, we will continue to focus on fostering a positive and inclusive school environment where every child feels valued and supported. I encourage you to join us in celebrating the achievements of our students and to participate in the various activities and events we have planned. Together, we can make March a month of learning, growth, and community at our school.
Warm regards,
Ms. Urquhart
Friendly Reminders
- Please remember that the front parking lot is only for families that have students who attend our SDC classes and bus drop off.
- The handicap marked spots in the front parking lot require a a handicap placard or sticker.
- It is imperative that your children arrive to school on time. When a student is frequently tardy they have lower grade point averages (GPAs), lower scores on standardized assessments, and lower graduation rates. Chronic tardiness in elementary and middle school is also linked to failure in high school.

Counselor's Corner
A coping skill is the way that you handle anger, stress, anxiety, fear or any other big feeling. A good coping skill helps you feel better in the moment without having unexpected behaviors. A poor coping skill is one that might feel good when you use it, but it ends up hurting you or other people. Using poor coping skills for a long time can be harmful. Some examples of these are yelling/screaming, naming calling, blaming others, avoiding people and negative self talk. See the picture below for some examples of GOOD coping skills.
READ ABOUT IT
Here are some books to help you learn more about problem solving:
Anh’s Anger By Gail Silver
B Is For Breathe By Melissa Munro Boyd
When Miles Got Mad By Sam Kurtzman-Counter
Wilma Jean: The Worry Machine By Julia Cook
PRACTICE
Together with your child, create a “calm space” in your home. It can be a chair, a part of a room, etc. Let your child decide what should go in the space. A comfy blanket, some headphones, a stress ball or coloring pages are all great ideas. Let this place be a refuge that all family members can go to when they feel the need to calm down!
Write some things on small pieces of paper that annoy you. Scrunch up the papers like balls and play a little March Madness by shooting the papers into the nearest basket or trash can. As you shoot, say out loud some things you can do to calm yourself so you don’t react in anger when these things happen.
TALK ABOUT IT
Here are some discussion points to help you talk about social problem solving with your child:
Why do you think it is important to calm down when you are feeling upset?
What are things that make you feel upset?
What are 3 things you can do to help you feel more calm?
Do you feel like you can talk to me if you are feeling upset? Why or why not?
Once you get upset, is it easy for you to calm down? Why or why not?
How often do you feel angry? How often do you feel worried?
