Hello Brimfield Families!
Empathy is a vital skill that helps our children navigate the complex social world around them. It's the ability to understand and share the feelings of others. As parents, we play a crucial role in nurturing empathy in our children, laying the foundation for positive relationships and a compassionate outlook on life.
Modeling Empathy
Children learn by example, so one of the most effective ways to teach empathy is by modeling it ourselves. When we show empathy towards others in our words and actions, our children observe and internalize these behaviors. Whether it's comforting a friend in need or actively listening to someone's concerns, our actions speak volumes.
Encouraging Perspective-Taking
Helping our children see things from another person's point of view is another essential aspect of fostering empathy. Encourage them to imagine how someone else might feel in a given situation. Ask questions like, "How do you think your friend felt when you shared your snack with them?" This helps children develop the ability to consider the emotions and experiences of others.
Teaching Kindness and Compassion
Acts of kindness, no matter how small, can have a big impact on cultivating empathy. Encourage your child to perform acts of kindness regularly, such as helping a classmate with their schoolwork or saying kind words to someone who is feeling down. These actions reinforce the importance of considering others' feelings and needs.
Creating a Culture of Understanding
Promote open communication in your household where feelings are acknowledged and respected. Encourage your child to express their emotions and listen actively when they share their thoughts and feelings. By creating a safe and supportive environment, you empower your child to develop empathy towards others and themselves.
Practicing Empathy in Everyday Situations
Opportunities to practice empathy are all around us. Whether it's comforting a sibling who scraped their knee or including a classmate who is feeling left out, encourage your child to act with empathy in their daily interactions. These small gestures can make a big difference in fostering a caring and compassionate attitude.
Celebrating Empathy
Finally, celebrate moments when your child demonstrates empathy towards others. Praise their kindness and acknowledge their efforts to understand and support others. By reinforcing these behaviors, you reinforce the value of empathy in your child's life.
In conclusion, empathy is a fundamental skill that helps our children build meaningful connections with others and navigate the complexities of the world with compassion. By modeling empathy, encouraging perspective-taking, teaching kindness, creating a culture of understanding, and providing opportunities for practice, we can empower our children to become empathetic individuals who make a positive difference in the lives of others.
Thank you for your continued support in nurturing empathy in our children.
Warm regards,
Mrs. Kuzas

PBIS CORNER
What is PBIS?
Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports is an important part of the school environment to encourage positive behavior. There are clear expectations throughout the school that are taught consistently throughout the year. The four expectations promoted at Field Local Schools are:
Safe
Outstanding
Accountable
Respectful
When students do not respond to teaching of the building or classroom expectations, we will view it as an opportunity for re-teaching, not just negative consequences. Students still receive consequences for negative behavior. The goal of the consequence is to teach students so they will not repeat the negative behavior.
