3rd Grade Update
Our class will be starting a Storytelling Passport to Computer Science unit in the Computer Lab. I am excited we have this opportunity. It is a coding unit using Scratch. Students will be guided through the unit and earn stickers for successfully completing steps. If we like this unit, then we can order additional units to work on later in the year. We are hoping to start on Tuesday. You can check out more information at www.cs-first.com . We will keep you posted on how it is going.

Reading
We are currently reading aloud - Fish in a Tree We are also working on main idea and details using nonfiction books. I would like all students to have at least one nonfiction book of interest they are reading.
Current Skill Focus - Main idea and details and Asking and Answering Questions using nonfiction (informational) text, Author's Purpose for writing (PIE - ask your child what it means)
Grammar Focus - Nouns (Singular and Plural)
Writing - Informational - We are integrating our science study of the rock cycle to writing an informational essay.
Math
In Unit 4 we are learning how to draw a model to represent multiplication. We are learning multiplication by stating 5 groups of (x) 6. This number model would be 5 x 6. We are also learning it as rows x columns. As we work to learn our basic facts, the quicker they master them, the easier math is going to be.
Timed multiplication test focus: 2-3
Next week: (After Thanksgiving) 3-4
Ask your child about how they are doing on learning their multiplication tables.
South Carolina History
We are learning about the establishment of the Carolina Colony. Students have received their study guide for an assessment Friday, November 20. I will be available for a study session Friday morning for those students who would like to come in early to finish studying.
Science
We have done a lot of research on the Rock Cycle in order to write an informational paper. Now we will be conducting experiments to further our understanding about rocks and minerals. Students will receive a study guide to prepare for an assessment scheduled for Tuesday, November 24.
Note from PTO
This year MGES will be having Field Days on November 23rd and 24th as opposed to the end of the year. If you would like to volunteer, please go to the following link where parents can sign up to help. Feel free to volunteer during multiple time slots!! For liability and safety concerns please remember that if you are volunteering, younger siblings are not allowed in the games area. All volunteers need to check in at the front office, where you will be directed to the Volunteer check-in table. Other Notes
Don't forget to check and sign your child's agenda each night. Encourage them to write neatly so you can read what they should be doing. Every child should be able to communicate what they are doing in class.
Purple folders come home on Wednesday. Please make sure you are reviewing the papers and signing the folder each week. The folders are due back to school by Friday.
