Daily Screening Checklist - Recent changes
Has your child been a household contact of a case2 of COVID-19 in the last 14 days? A household contact: a person who lives in the same residence as the case OR who has been in frequent, long-duration, close-range interaction with a case of COVID-19. For example, siblings, someone who slept over, or someone who provided direct physical care to the child.
If the answer is “YES” AND they are NOT fully immunized
: Child should stay home and NOT attend school, childcare and/or other activities for 14 days from the last day of exposure and monitor for symptoms. If your child has symptoms, proceed to question 2.
Thank you for continuing to ensure your review the checklist each day for symptoms before sending your child to school. Thank you also for ensuring children come to school with a mask. A few extras in the backpack is a great practice for this guideline.

Volunteers & Guests
As mentioned in previous newsletters, we look forward to welcoming volunteers and guest speakers to OLA in October. We will do this together, and purposefully. When a volunteering opportunity arises, it will be communicated to you either in the Sunday newsletters or from your child's teacher. Volunteering will be purposeful in nature and initiated by OLA staff or School Council in collaboration with the OLA Leadership team (hot lunch for example). We will begin with limited or purposely structured interaction with children.
Volunteers will be required to complete the Daily Screening Checklist before arriving to the school. Volunteers will sign-in at the office and acknowledge their completion of the Daily Screening Checklist. Volunteers and guests and will be expected to wear a volunteer badge which indicates to staff and students that they have completed the checklist, signed-in at the office, and are at the school for a specific pre-arranged purpose. All volunteers will also follow all masking and health and safety protocols while at OLA.
Dropping off or picking up children, lunches or items will continue in the same fashion, and our exterior doors will remain secured.
The engagement of parents in their child's education is an integral element to the learning success of children. We are looking forward to welcoming back this partnership in a fashion that ensures the continued health and safety of our OLA community.
Together, we've got this!
Should you have any questions, please contact Mme Gravelle at 780-998-3716.
OLA & SAB Mentorship Program
While this year's current context is preventing us from facilitating this program, it will be a yearly and amazing program that we plan to welcome again next year.
Outdoor Fun
Thank you for the awesome donations!
As we dive more into flexible seating in our classrooms and in the Library Learning Commons, we continue to accept donations of:
- leather/faux leather foot stools
- sturdy short shelves (average height of a desk)
Thank you in advance for your help and support! Feel free to drop items off at the school and connecting with us through our fancy new door intercom system!
Thank you! It takes a village and OLA's village is amazing!
Learning Disruption Grant
As in every school year, Grades 1-3 teachers work with students to assess and address literacy and math learning. Each year, we use the EICS Literacy and Numeracy Frameworks to determine areas which require focused support and set learning goals. However, the disruption to in-class learning during the Covid-19 pandemic may have resulted in some of our students not attaining the skills they would have in a regular year. As a result, targeted literacy and math assessments designed and supported by the division will be used with all students in Grades 1-3 as an extension to the classroom processes already in place to identify students who require additional intervention to develop their skills and close gaps.
Alberta Education has provided funding to support schools with staffing and resources for these supplementary interventions. Students in Grades 2-3 will complete specialized assessments in September and students in Grade 1 will be assessed later in the school year. Interventions in both groupings will begin shortly after the assessments are complete. Students identified as requiring additional support will receive 30 hours of supplementary programming in literacy and between 20-30 hours of support in numeracy in small group formats from specialized intervention teachers. During and after the intervention period, student progress will be monitored and communicated with classroom teachers and parents. A final communication of gains will also be provided to Alberta Education.
Once assessments are complete, we will communicate with parents of selected students prior to and throughout the intervention so we can work as a team in support of skill development.
Attendance Reporting Procedures
1-877-246-9970 or leave a message on our voice mail. Attendance Reporting Procedures
A reminder for all families that the AHS Daily Assessment needs to be completed and actioned each morning prior to coming to school. If your child is experiencing symptoms and therefore staying at home, please select the following absence codes:
“Flu-like symptoms”
“other illness or injury” If they are experiencing symptoms that you do not deem to be flu-like, or your child has a medical appointment.
“parent excused.” If your child is experiencing no symptoms at all, please choose this. The parent excused absence should only be chosen if you are keeping your child home for a reason that does not pertain to a medical issue. (i.e dance competition)
Questions? Please feel free to contact us at the school. We are happy to navigate through absences with you.
