π ANNOUNCEMENTS π
ART
February brings ocean animal art for the younger grades. Third graders will be starting 3D paper mache while fourth graders are working on oil resists. Our fifth graders are working with the medium of collage. As always the art room is a busy creative place, but most of all messy. Please have your students dress for the mess on art rotation days. Thank you to those parents who have already donated magazines for the art room! We are still looking for magazine donations for the art room, if you have any you may drop them off in the front office and let them know they are for art.

MUSIC
Fourth graders have received their recorders and are learning how to play the notes B, A, and G and reading them on a musical staff. It's important that fourth graders are responsible for their instruments. When they are not playing their recorders, they should be stored safely in their backpacks; that way, they always have them at school ready to play in Music class.
Fifth graders are continuing to learn how to play the ukulele; they are practicing
the chords C major, F major, and G major. A lot of songs can be played with these three chords, so we are revisiting songs that were learned in previous years in Music class and are playing and singing with ukuleles as accompaniment.
Third graders are playing Japanese music games with emphasis on solfege syllables in the pentatonic scale (Do, Re, Mi, So, La) and their relation to each other on the musical staff. Second graders are learning folk songs with instrumentation using known rhythms (quarter note, two eighth notes, half note, etc.) while identifying and practicing solfege syllables in the pentatonic scale.
First graders are identifying and practicing reading rhythms (quarter note, two eighth notes, quarter rest) and are identifying and practicing solfege syllables So and Mi. They will learn La as well in February and new games and activities using these new music concepts.
Kindergarten is continuing steady beat and identifying different types of voices in Music class. They are exploring barred instruments (xylophones) and practicing and labeling unpitched percussion (hand drums, tambourines, etc.).

STEM-Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math
We have learned so much in STEM so far this year! Lewis Leopards are really improving in their collaborative skills, and using the Learner Profiles in almost every challenge that they attempt. They are also using Reflection Stem Questions in order to really think about what they are learning each time they visit STEM. Kindergarten will continue their CIVIL ENGINEERING unit by building bridges from Legos and also from a variety of materials. They also have to test their bridges making sure they can stay up when weight is placed on them. First grade is continuing their ENVIRONMENT & ECOLOGY unit, studying what ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERS do as well as conducting tests on different liquids in order to test their Ph levels. Second and third graders are continuing their coding unit, learning about conditionals, block coding, and moving into robotics. Fourth and fifth graders are learning about MANUFACTURING PRODUCTION, and what is called ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING. They are learning to use the 3D software called TINKERCAD, and designing a keychain with their name on it to be printed on our 3D printer!
