April is Autism Awareness & Acceptance Month
Each week, we'll be sharing a few items that may be helpful for conversations at home:
- Autism impacts a person's five senses. For example, you may see a student upset if it is really loud, or they may not like certain food.
- Visual supports are often helpful to students with Autism. Modeling or showing a picture to your friend with ASD can help them to understand what you are asking them to do.
- Social Interactions may be more difficult for students with ASD. Friends can help students to feel more comfortable in social settings and teach valuable social skills by inviting them to play. (you can wave or say hi, be a partner in PE class, lunch buddy etc.)
Breakfast with a Buddy
Friday, April 22 - 8:00 AM - 9:00 AM
Hickory Woods Cafeteria
Start the day with a loved one! Enjoy muffins, donuts, juice and coffee!

Nominations Wanted For “Kindness Matters” Award
The Walled Lake Schools Diversity Committee is seeking nominations for the “Kindness Matters Award”. We are celebrating the “Season for Nonviolence” in the Walled Lake Schools. The “Season for Nonviolence” is observed from January 30th when Gandhi was assassinated until April 4th when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated. The “Kindness Matters Award” is another aspect of our school district’s celebration of the “Season for Nonviolence.”
The “Kindness Matters Award” is intended to honor and recognize those individuals and organizations who promote peaceful and nonviolent ways to solve problems. Nominations can be made for students, staff members, parents, community members, or organizations who:
work toward the peaceful resolution of problems
teach about peace and harmony to others
serve members of the community in times of crisis
Individuals or organizations receiving this award will be honored at the Walled Lake Schools Board of Education meeting in May.
Nomination forms for the “Kindness Matters Award” are available in your school office. Please submit your nominations to your school office or to Nayal Maktari, Principal of Pleasant Lake Elementary, at NayalMaktari@wlcsd.org.
Nominations are due by Monday, April 25th.

Optional COVID testing now available at the ESC - REPEAT
The District is now offering optional COVID testing to our staff, students, and parents. Both Rapid and PCR tests are available. The testing will take place at the Educational Services Center (850 Ladd Road, Building D Walled Lake, MI 48390) on Tuesdays and Fridays from 2-7 p.m.
The COVID testing staff, provided by a third party, will be responsible for letting people in the side door on the south side of the building.
- If you have insurance, your insurance provider will be billed.
- If you do not have insurance, there is a cost of $110.00 for a PCR test and $50.00 for a rapid test - This comes as a result of the Federal Government no longer providing funding for testing.
There will be signage placed both inside and outside of the building. To set up an appointment for testing, please complete this requisition form.

ALL drivers must use caution and drive slowly.
Avoid cell phone use in our parking lot.
