Updates from our Title III Coach-Ricardo Melendez
Intervention Teacher Needed!
We have an opening for afterschool intervention that will support our 1st and 2nd grade English Leaners who scored an overall 3 on last year’s summative ELPAC. This intervention will focus on reading and writing. Intervention scheduled to begin this week. You can email me or Mr. Carrillo if you are interested. Thank You!
Designated Frame of Practice
How will you deliver lessons based Part II ELD Standards (Learning about How English Works) supported by Part I ELD Standards (Interacting in Meaningful Ways) this week?
- Designated Frame of Practice lessons can be found at https://achieve.lausd.net/Page/8773#spn-content
- You can develop your own lesson (lesson template can be found in Malabar’s Google shared drive)
- You can use Benchmark dELD and add a constructive conversation task about the language feature you are targeting.
Our English Learners need ample opportunities to able to develop an understanding of how English works. Please contact me if you would like to plan and co-teach a lesson.
2021-2022 SPSA Measurable Goal
By June 2022, English Learners scoring proficient (Overall Level 4) on ELPAC will increase from 7% to 30% as measured by the Summative ELPAC assessment.

SATURDAY PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
FEBRUARY 26TH
TOPIC: Literacy Academy Prep
We invite you to come to Malabar on Saturday, February 26th from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon. We will begin our day with a short Zoom meeting presented by Vanessa Chavez and myself. We will share some ideas on things to do to plan for your small group instruction. Teachers will then have the rest of the time to plan for Literacy Academies, update your Literacy Academy Charts/Schedules/Focus Areas, and gather materials to prepare for your small groups in order to differentiate instruction. We will be available to print materials for you and run some copies if needed. You may also visit RM#6 where we have our Guided Reading Books and other materials for check-out. Take this opportunity to get your centers in order and be ready to go for Monday. The objective is to make this a hands-on working session geared toward Literacy Academy Planning and Preparation. Vanessa and I are excited to support you in any way we can! Teachers will be paid at their hourly rate. $$$ 😊
The SSPT Committee is here to support and help all student’s and teacher’s. We appreciate all your hard work and dedication!
STEAM Instructional Coach-Angela Muro
Hello teachers,
I want to give a big shout out to 4th grade! They put together a fabulous presentation for STEAM Night. For those of you who missed it, 4th graders shared their learning about electrical systems. They shared a how-to, demonstrations, and vignettes of news reporting, black-outs, and town hall meetings to name a few. They were very creative in their use of media. I think we have some future thespians among us. It’s a shame that we did not have as many families and/or Malabar staff participate this time. It would be great if we could keep the momentum going. I know that you are all promoting STEAM Night. Maybe you could offer some type of bribe incentive to encourage students to join future events. Something to think about for our next STEAM Night on March 17th.
On another note, I’d like to share with you some tools to help you with assessment in Amplify for grades 3-6. When you are in the Amp Sci app, there is a hamburger icon (3 horizontal lines) at the top left. When you click on the hamburger, it has the simulations for your units of study. If you scroll further down, you will find “Additional Resources.” Below that is a green icon “Benchmark Assessments.” Please consider using these to assess end-of-unit learning. These assessments provide students with practice answering CAST-like questions and can also serve to monitor many ELA CCSS, including critical-thinking, reasoning skills, and reading comprehension. They go deeper than the end-of-unit task embedded in the lessons. They are comparable to the FOSS assessments we used in the past. If you need help finding these gems, please reach out to me.
As always, if you have questions or need support with anything STEAM, shoot me an email or come by Room 5.
Enjoy your much deserved 3-day weekend!

Focus on Classroom Observations-Standard 3: Delivery of Instruction
As we visit classrooms, we will be focusing on the following two elements:
3b2. Discussion Techniques and Student Participation Techniques are used to ensure that all students share their thinking around challenging questions
Effective Practice: Teacher uses intentional, differentiated strategies to engage all students in discussion, attempting gradual release from teacher-directed to student initiated conversation. Students participate in intellectually challenging discussions.
3c1. Standards-Based Projects, Activities and Assignments Standards-aligned learning activities cognitively engage students in the lesson
Effective Practice: Instructional projects, activities and assignments are aligned to the instructional standards, require higher levels of thinking, are culturally relevant, and may include real-world application. Most students are cognitively engaged, constructing their own understanding and exploring content. The learning activities are differentiated, as necessary, to meet the learning needs of student subgroups.
I will continue visiting classrooms to observe math instruction this week. I look forward to observing the following math instructional expectations:
Mathematics
Every lesson will be taught in 3 parts that will include opportunities for discussion and journal writing.
Align IAB’s/ Edulastic with pacing plan to analyze data and plan for instruction.
Use anchor charts to prioritize and ground student learning.
Math projects to analyze student thinking/critical thinking.
These expectations should be visible during the observation. I should see the math lesson conducted in three parts with various opportunities for students to discuss and process their learning. I should see the use of a journal where students write what they have learned or what they are learning. I should see anchor charts posted around the classroom as a resource for students.
Please see me if you have any questions regarding these expectations.
Math Observation Updates
Glows:
- Anchor charts are visible in the classroom and teachers are referring to them throughout the math lessons. Anchor charts help to make connections around learning and help to build vocabulary and strategies. Take a look at Room 36 or room 37 to see the Anchor Charts posted in the classroom.
- Use of Math Journals-Most classrooms have math journals and are being used to record math concepts, strategies, models and vocabulary. Students also have the opportunity to conduct QW (Quick Write) in their journals that help them process their learning.
- Students have opportunities to turn and talk with their partners. These opportunities allow students to engage in learning.
- Constructive conversations are happening in math classrooms.
Grows:
- Use Great Minds video lessons as a resource and not to replace the teacher. These videos were developed to help support virtual learning last year. These lessons would be great to post on your Schoology as a resource for students. They can watch the lesson for homework to frontload the lesson or as a review for those that need the reinforcement.
- Take a look at how you pace your lesson. The Sprint part of Eureka is practice for mental math and should be done in 5 minutes. If you are conducting a Daily Review or practice question, make sure that it does not become your lessons. With so many levels in the classroom, it becomes difficult to differentiate instruction to meet the needs of all students.
