A Message from the Superintendent
Dear Members of the AUSD Community,
This week is President's Week. Students resume classes on Tuesday, February 16. When we resume, we will continue teaching and learning remotely. February is Black History Month, when we annually highlight the contributions of African Americans to the United States.
Enjoy the week away from the computer and the President's Day holiday too. But be safe and stay healthy.
The progress reporting period for all grades ends the following Friday, February 19. Here are some other key upcoming dates. Find the entire 2020-21 calendar here.
Next Progress Reporting Period 2/22/21 - 4/9/21
State Testing Window 03/01/21 - 05/28/21
Spring Break is 03/29/21 - 04/02/21. No classes.
Last Quarter Reporting Period 4/12/21 - 5/28/21
Last Day of School is May 28
There's more good news about Riverside's COVID-19 rates. We're moving in the right direction! Since the peak somewhere around mid-January, the indicators for the color-coded reopening plan have consistently trended downward. We are slowly but surely approaching the target rates to transition from the Purple Tier to the Red Tier and be eligible to reopen. The target rates consist of a positivity rate of less than 8.0% (currently 16.6%), an adjusted case rate of less than 7.0 cases per 100,000 (currently 62.3), and a health equity metric of less than 8.0% (currently 18.5%). Conditions improved enough in recent weeks for the County Health Officer to approve some individual sports competitions. We held a cross country meet with our neighboring districts this past weekend. We are easing our way back into normal school operations. We will get there. Stay strong. Stay together. See all of this week's COVID-19 indicators as well as the color-coded tier system below in the News section under COVID.
As of Friday, all public schools in Riverside County remain closed for in-person instruction, although Alvord and some other districts have offered in-person instruction and support services for some of our students with special needs, following the state's small cohort guidelines. We suspended our small group cohort program in December when the virus surged. We plan to reopen the program on February 22.
I've received questions about obtaining a waiver to open our elementary schools while we remain in the purple tier. The waiver program was discontinued by the state on January 14 when they updated their reopening guidance. We have up to this point, and will continue from this point forward, to advocate at the state level for the safe reopening of our schools.
I hope this week is restful and your children and our students can take a break from their screens. The district office is open this week for phone calls, emails, and by appointment. Our food services will be closed this week. We provided a 7-day supply to our families last Friday.
Last week we celebrated National School Counseling Week. It's impossible to thank our counselors enough for the incredible job they are doing, and have always done, to support students and student learning. Like our teachers and support staff, meeting the academic and social emotional needs of all of our students remotely is very difficult, but our courageous team of educators have embraced the challenge and are to be commended for their outstanding work. Our courageous parents are to be commended too for their outstanding work and for partnering so closely with us. The 2-way support means a lot to us and makes an incredibly difficult task a little easier.
On behalf of the Board of Education, thank you for being great partners and for your continued support as we look forward to brighter days ahead when our students and their families can get back to normal. In the meantime, stay strong, stay healthy, and be well.
Sincerely,
Allan Mucerino
