Weekly Concept: Cooperation Works!
Essential Question: How do people get along?
This week our class will be focusing on how people get along. Which is better, cooperation or competition? This is a particularly timely question to pose during the Iditarod race.

Due to our recent cancellation on Thursday, School will be in session on Monday, February 17.
Iditarod Quilt Project
Three years ago, I was a finalist for the Iditarod Teacher on the Trail™, a teacher from across the nation who is selected to report out to classrooms all across the globe about the race. This teacher actually travels the same trail as the dogs and mushers (sled dog "drivers")...only by bush plane. Even though I was not selected, being a finalist allowed me to actually be in Alaska for the week prior to and during the race to present teaching strategies to other teachers from across the U.S.
One of the activities that we, as teachers completed together was to design an Iditarod-themed quilt that we send to all of the teachers' classrooms throughout the year. We are so excited to have one such quilt on loan for the rest of this month. You cannot believe all of the geography and math lessons we are completing with this quilt. Ask your child what his/her quilt square looks like that (s)he designed for our class' Iditarod quilt. I'm telling you, as worked on assembling the students' quilt blocks it really occurred to me, These kiddos know their Iditarod and the character traits it represents. The way they've internalized it gives me chills.
This real-life service learning project addresses the following standards:
- "Locate Indiana and other Midwestern states on maps using simple grid systems."
- Identify the northern, southern, eastern and western hemispheres; cardinal and intermediate directions; and determine the direction and distance from one place to another
Telling Time Practice
All in all, the vast majority of our students are doing extremely well with all telling time expectations. Some however are tripped up with those times when the minute hand are before the hour. It is very common for a few students to call 1:50 2:50, simply because that hour hand is so close to that 2. To keep your child's telling time skills honed, here are some practice sites:
Thank you in advance for assisting your child with this important authentic skill. In class we will step in up a bit by problem solving with elapsed time. You might hear your child talk about an open number line as a useful strategy for figuring these types of problems out.
Jump Rope for Heart Update
Please keep the momentum going for our annual Jump Rope for Heart event until the actual event on the 28th. The generosity of our small community never ceases to amaze me! We just cannot thank you enough for your cooperation with this.
Valentine's Day
On behalf of the kiddos, I want to extend a hearty thank you to those of you who so kindly provided items for our special snack on Valentine's Day. You wouldn't believe how excited and grateful they were for each and every Valentine they received.
Next Week's Share Topic
To celebrate Presidents’ Day, choose one president. Find a few facts and maybe a picture of that president. A timeline would be one wonderful way to organize his life. Libraries, encyclopedias, and the Internet are all great places to start your research, but "winging it," and reading directly from a page are never acceptable. If your child is looking for some interesting sites to grab facts about our presidents, then (s)he might want to consider the following:
