Mercutio
People should listen to their friends better
Act 1, Scene 1
During the last few minutes of Mercutio's life, Benvolio tried giving Mercutio some wise advice... "Put up your swords. You know not what you do" (995). Instead of putting this advice into consideration Mercutio decided to ignore it. This is a great example of why people should listen to their friends better, if Mercutio would have listened to Benvolio he would have never died in the sword fight with Tybolt.
Act 1, Scene 4
While Romeo was sobbing over how beautiful Juliet was, if it wasn't for Mercutio's advice he may have never gotten her... "You are a lover. Borrow cupid's wings And soar with them above a common bound" (1009). Romeo made the right choice listening to his best friends advice about him being a lover and how he should proceed in the pursuit of his dream girl, Juliet.
Act 1, Scene 1
One of the biggest mistakes Mercutio made was not taking his friend Benvolio's advice into consideration... "I do but keep the peace. Put up thy sword, Or manage it to part these men with me" (995). Benvolio was trying to convince Mercutio to put away his sword and not fight with Tybolt, but Mercutio decided to ignore his advice and fight Tybolt anyway. Which ended in Mercutio's death, people should start listening to their friends better to prevent events like this from happening.
Theme
Romeo could have most likely have escaped after killing Tybolt without being seen, if he would have done what Benvolio told him to do... "Romeo, away, be gone!... O, I am fourtune's fool!... Why dost you stay?" (1049). When Benvolio found out that the citizens were coming after Romeo for killing Tybolt, he immediately told Romeo to run away as fast as he could before the citizens saw which he went. Romeo hesitated and didn't run, the citizens caught up and saw which Romeo went. This is why friends should listen to their friends better, so they can avoid sticky situations like this one.
