BSD Family Update
Tuesday, April 20, 2021
Dear BSD Families:
We know that recent events in our nation and today’s Derek Chauvin murder trial verdict have and will provoke strong emotions. Our students will be inundated in the coming days with images and commentary they may not understand. Some may not want to talk about it while others may have questions or want to engage in conversation about social justice, race, policing, and politics.
As educators, we have a responsibility to acknowledge the discussions happening in our community, and to ensure our students have a place to express their opinions, learn from each other, and know that they are safe.
It is important for all of us to remember our reactions in difficult times like these reflect our individual life experiences -- no two the same. In the Bremerton School District we use our AVID Norms to help us discuss and process current events:
Ask questions
Engage fully
Integrate new information
Open your mind to diverse views
Utilize what you learn
We pride ourselves on our diverse community. Our goal is to make every student, family, and staff member feel valued, respected and cared for each day. Our strength comes from embracing our diversity and all that our varied perspectives and backgrounds bring to our community.
Please reach out to our school counselors, teachers, or principals if you have questions or if you’d like more guidance in talking with your child about these complex topics.

The Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction has compiled a list of resources for educators, families, and caregivers seeking support in how to talk to their students or children about today’s verdict, racism, and police violence. Read State Superintendent Chris Reykdal's statement here.
