From Principal Dr. Barnette
Dear Cougar Families,
Autumn is a fun and busy time of year at Diegueño Middle School! Coming Attractions include:
Our bike safety class will take place on Monday during Late Start. Check-in will begin at 8:15 AM at Cougar Hall.
Club rush will occur on Wednesday during lunch.
Make-up picture day is Monday, October 3.
Principal’s Coffee (AKA Bagels with Dr. Barnette) will be on October 5 at 8:45 AM.
San Dieguito Academy PALs will be visiting our students in early October to talk about suicide prevention.
We’ll be celebrating Red Ribbon Week from October 10 - 14. This year’s theme is, “Celebrate Life. Live Drug-Free.” Your students will participate in activities all week focused on making smart choices when it comes to vaping, drugs, and alcohol. We need some more volunteer help to make this week a success. I hope you’ll consider signing up to help here. We’ll share more details about the planned activities in the coming weeks. Many thanks to PTSA for their hard work on this important awareness-raising week.
If you haven’t already done so, I hope you’ll follow our school on Instagram and Facebook.
Have a wonderful fall weekend! Go Cougars!!

Dropping Off Forgotten Items
To minimize class disruption please be aware drop-off items such as Chromebooks, PE clothes, homework, lunches, etc., will not be delivered to class.
In morning announcements, students are told to ONLY come to check the Forgotten Items Cart during the break, CAT and lunch. The office is NOT responsible for items not picked up by students.
A Message from the Health Office
Reminder: Hotter weather is coming early next week, please make sure your student has a refillable water bottle or water bottle in their backpack and to be drinking water throughout the day. Additionally, there are many students who are reporting that they are not eating breakfast, snacks, or lunch. Physical exercise on an empty stomach and dehydration is a recipe for disaster. Please encourage your child to eat breakfast or come to school early and access the free food provided by nutrition services.
Our brains and bodies work much better when we have fuel in our tanks!
Attendance Corner
· Report all absences to the Attendance office. Parents/guardians have 48 hours following the absence to verify and clear absences. After 48 hours, any unverified absences will automatically be considered truant.
· Call or email 24-48 in advance for an “Off-Campus” pass, if picking up students early for appointments. Students will need to pick up a pass before school on the day of their appointment.
· For the safety of our students, a Parent or Guardian will need to sign out a student through attendance in the administration building. Students cannot walk or ride their bikes/e-bikes home.
Thank you for your cooperation

PTSA Membership
Thank you Cougar Community to all of those who've donated to PTSA and signed up to be members. This year we've already had 140 families donate and sign up to be PTSA members. So far, we've collected over $14,000, which will go to help all of our students. Strong membership participation allows us to have more of a voice at the state level. If you would like to donate and become a PTSA member please go to www.dieguenoptsa.org/donate. You are welcome to donate all year, however, we would love to see more funds at the beginning of the year so we can plan and do as much for the students as soon as possible.
Whether you've donated or not, we would love to hear your thoughts on how we can utilize this money to help all students. Please look out for upcoming events. Everyone's voice is welcome. We are thrilled to have such a generous and active school community.
Sincerely, PTSA
