Artesia Pioneer Regiment Wins
Congratulations to the Artesia High School Pioneer Regiment for taking First Place for overall high school band at this year’s Baldwin Park Holiday Parade. Well done, Pioneers!
Burbank Students Help Artesia Celebrate
The Burbank Elementary School Spirit Squad helped the City of Artesia celebrate the holidays by performing at the City’s tree lighting ceremony last week. The Spirit Squad provided energy and got the crowd into the holiday spirit!

Gahr Students Looking Into Future Careers
Last week, Gahr High School students enrolled in the Career Technical Education Dual Enrollment Sports Medicine Pathway visited the Cerritos College Kinesiology program to learn more about future careers and the courses part of the pathway. Students completed three rotations, taking a tour of the training room and meeting with athletic trainers, touring the kinesiology facilities, and learning more about the Cerritos Complete program. They even participated in a sports medicine trivia contest and injury-taping competition with students from other school districts. The ABCUSD CTE Dual Enrollment programs allow high school students to earn college credit through Cerritos College as part of their regular school day. ABC Tech Symposium
About 300 educators from across the District converged at Artesia High School last Thursday for this year’s ABC Tech Symposium. This year’s event focused on Artificial Intelligence, or AI, and how it will impact education. Attendees left with a greater understanding of how to harness the power of AI to help students succeed. Thank you to our I.T. department for putting together another great symposium!
Board Meeting Recap
The ABCUSD Board of Education held its annual reorganization meeting on Tuesday, December 5, 2023. The Board selected Mrs. Sophia Tse to serve as President for the coming year while also selecting Mr. Ernie Nishii as Vice President and Mr. Francisco Noyola as Clerk. After the Board’s reorganization, they took the following actions:
- Assigned Board Members to serve on Board Advisory Committees and as liaisons to local cities and programs
- Students from Hawaiian Elementary School led the flag salute
- Heard a report from Diya Bhaichand, a Student Board Representative from Cerritos High School, who shared information about the school, including the school’s marching band earning first place at a recent competition, the football team winning a CIF championship, and the school’s holiday drive to support local families
- Approved community member and student appointments to Board Advisory Committees
- Approved Calendar Year 2024 Board Meetings
- Approved Resolution 23-14 The Great Kindness Challenge Week
- Approved new courses for Alternative Pathway to Diploma to begin in the fall of the 2023-2024 school year
- Adopted new textbooks for the Early College program through our partnership with Cerritos College
- Approved the First Interim Report for the 2023-2024 fiscal year with a positive certification and budget adjustments as reflected in the report
- Approved Nigro & Nigro, PC as the auditor to provide the annual audit of the fiscal years 2023-2024 through 205-2026, with two additional one-year options
- Received a report of site visits, reviews, and uniform complaint data for the first quarter of 2023-2024 with no complaints
The next Regular Meeting of the ABCUSD Board of Education is scheduled for Tuesday, January 16, 2024, at 7:00 p.m.

In 1965 the Artesia, Bloomfield, and Carmenita School Districts unified and became the ABC Unified School District. Today, the District serves over 20,000 Pre-K to 12th Grade and adult education students through its 30 campuses, adult school, and virtual academy. The District is home to some of the most awarded and recognized schools in California and serves the cities of Artesia, most of Cerritos, Hawaiian Gardens, as well as portions of Lakewood, Long Beach, and Norwalk.
