ANGST MOVIE SCREENING & PANEL DISCUSSION AT THE OAC
The Oconomowoc Area School District and Parents United are partnering to present a free screening of the new documentary, “Angst: Raising Awareness around Anxiety” followed by a panel discussion on Tuesday, April 10th, 2018 at 6 pm at The Oconomowoc Arts Center.
A Resource Fair will be held prior to the movie from 6:00 pm – 6:30 pm with local mental health providers. The 55 minute documentary will be shown starting at 6:30 pm, and following the movie we’ll keep growing our skills and connections with a 30 minute panel discussion featuring Dr. David Jacobi, Ph.D., from Rogers Memorial, Deanna Marincic, MSW, from the GALS Institue, Amanda Zimmerman, LPC, from Aurora SFAP and Anne Welsh, OHS English teacher. The panel will be discussing the difference between stress and anxiety, how to recognize signs, exploring ways to help teens manage their stress both in and out of school, and sharing local resources for learning more and getting help.
Anxiety disorders are the most common mental health challenge in the U.S., affecting an estimated 31.9% of adolescents. The prevalence is currently higher for females at 38.0% than for males at 26.1%, according to the National Institute for Mental Health. While anxiety disorders are highly treatable, only one-third of those suffering receive treatment.
This film helps start a global conversation and raise awareness around anxiety with an emphasis on youth and families. Featured are candid interviews with children and young adults discussing their anxiety and the impact on their lives, along with a special interview with Michael Phelps, a mental health advocate and one of the greatest athletes of all-time. The documentary also includes discussions with mental health experts about the causes of anxiety and its sociological effects, as well as help, resources, and tools.
"We felt it was important to make a movie that could raise awareness to open up the conversation and provide hope," said producer and IndieFlix CEO, Scilla Andreen. "So many people struggle with anxiety and have trouble talking about it. We want to change that."
This is a free event open to all. Children should be accompanied by a caring adult. Registration is available online at www.eventbrite.com/e/angst-movie-screening-panel-discussion-tickets-43093874940. For questions or more information, contact Brianne Decker at 262-560-3126 or DeckerB@oasd.org.
