INNOVATION, EXCELLENCE, CHARACTER
WEEKLY NEWSLETTER - September 12, 2016
What an incredible weekend we enjoyed with our grandparents! Approximately 175 guests attended our Grandparents Day Luncheon on Sunday afternoon. Our wonderful grandparents were given a tour of the campus by our students, enjoyed a delicious lunch with their grandchildren, and then listened to a short presentation about what is happening within our school community.
Here are just a few photos that reflect a day filled with such warmth and joy.
A NOTE OF THANKS ABOUT CHARITABLE FUNDRAISING...
I would like to personally congratulate our students, teachers, parents, and school supporters for their amazing support of our September fundraiser, "COINS FOR A CURE." In only nine days, we have already doubled our initial fundraising goal!
This great work by our community reminds me of the famous quote above... "Start Where You Are. Use What You Have. Do What You Can." Our students are certainly embodying this mantra as they raise critical donations to help find a cure for childhood cancer.
Keep up the good work, everyone! We have a few more weeks before our fundraiser ends. We will culminate our month-long focus on kindness and caring with a school-wide pep rally and check presentation to CURE on Thursday, September 29. Please look for additional details in next week's newsletter about our pep rally; parents are invited to attend!
FSA Announces Spring Break Trip to "The Capitals of Scandinavia"
Fulton Science Academy Private School is pleased to announce an international travel opportunity to “The Capitals of Scandinavia." This trip, which applies to students in grades 6-10, will take place in the Spring of 2017.
As our world becomes increasingly more interconnected, it is critical for our students to become more culturally aware, explore new ideas, and experience, first-hand, life in other countries. We believe that when students are given an opportunity to see educational lessons at work outside of the traditional classroom, they develop a new and valuable perspective about the world around them.
An informational meeting about the trip to Scandinavia will be held on Tuesday, September 20th, at 4:20 p.m. in the FSA media center. The purpose of this meeting is to provide additional details, a proposed itinerary, etc. An EF Tour representative will also attend this meeting and will be happy to answer your questions. SPACE FOR THIS TRIP IS LIMITED. Reservations for this trip will begin to be accepted after this meeting, and spaces will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
If you plan to attend this meeting, please email nturan@fultonscienceacademy.org no later than Monday, September 19. We ask for an RSVP so that we can plan space accordingly. Thank you. We hope to see you there!

Sixth Graders Participate in Cardboard Boat Regatta
On Saturday, August 6, the Canoe Cubs held their first annual Cardboard Boat Regatta at the Canoe Lodge.
Seven crews and their cardboard creations lined the Lake Sconti beach ready to race and prove their sea-worthiness. Many hours of planning, designing and building were put into each craft and the crews were enthusiastic about their chance to take home the coveted winner’s trophy. Most importantly, teams kept their sense of humor, including FSAPS sixth graders, Ben C., Jake F., Bhatt N., and Kevin Y.
A total of four youth teams, ages 9-17, ran in the opening heat. FSA students were part of "Team Rub-A-Dub." Although off to an impressive start, their vessel started to take water and sink.
Maintaining an ever-present positive attitude, the boys seized the opportunity to take a bath in the lake; pulling out shower loofas and scrubbing themselves silly. With such a grand sinking performance, the crew won “Best Sunken Ship.” :)

Room Parents still Needed!
A Room Parent (Mom or Dad ) is the first parent a teacher will contact with issues about class activities such as field trips, performances, celebrations, items needed, and assisting teachers as required. It is an incredibly rewarding experience and is so important to our children and our hardworking faculty that each teacher have a room parent to assist them as necessary.
In lower grades, this position is typically more hands-on and involved than in higher grades; a teacher/parent liaison of sorts.
The following teachers do not yet have room parents:
Kanov - Pre-K
Whitlock - 1st Grade
Khan - 4th Grade
Korukmez - 5th Grade
Kurt - 6th & 7th Grade
Shealy - 6th Grade
Rios - 9th Grade
Will You Please Help? If so, please reach out to Aimee Nobile at abloom3@earthlink.net. Thank you.
PSAT UPDATE - Important Information!
FSA will offer an administration of the PSAT/NMSQT exam at 8 a.m. on Sunday, October 19th. This test will be eligible for all 8th, 9th and 10th graders, but REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED!
The PSAT/NMSQT® (or Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) is, as the title suggests, a preliminary version of the SAT. Not only does the PSAT help prepare students to take the SAT or ACT, the great thing about the PSAT/NMSQT is that a high score can also open the door to National Merit Scholarships and other awards. (Please note that only juniors are eligible for the National Merit Scholarship.)
The PSAT/NMSQ is approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes, so students will miss their first few periods of the day. The testing location will be at FSA, in the gym, and will begin promptly at 8 a.m. All students must be in the gym by 8 a.m. Once testing begins, students will not be permitted to enter the testing room late.
ALL students who sign up to take the PSAT/NMSQT will be required to attend a pre-gridding session one week prior to the exam date. This pre-gridding session will occur in the cafeteria at 8 a.m. on October 12 and should take about 30 to 40 minutes.
If you would like for your child to take the PSAT, you must email Ms. Kelly at lkelly@fultonscienceacademy.org and let her know that you want your child to take the PSAT on October 19th.
You can also have your child see Ms. Kelly in the Guidance office in order to sign up in person. The deadline to sign up your child to take the PSAT/NMSQT is September 22nd for test ordering purposes. All exams must be ordered by this date. The PSAT/NMSQT is for 8th, 9th and 10th graders only.
Please make sure your child doesn't forget to bring the following items on test day-
- Two No. 2 pencils
- An acceptable calculator (see below)
- Student ID number or Social Security number (optional)
- Email address (optional)
During the test (including breaks), students are prohibited from having anything on their desks but a test book, an answer sheet, No. 2 pencils with erasers, and (when permitted) an acceptable calculator.
Calculator use — Calculators are permitted only on the Math Test – Calculator Icons on the answer sheet and in the test book indicate where a calculator is allowed. All questions can be solved without a calculator, but a scientific or graphing calculator is recommended.
Students are advised to bring their own calculators and must keep only one on their desk; any additional backup calculators must be kept under the student’s desk. Students may not share calculators.
Unacceptable calculators — Students may not use:
Laptops or other computers, tablets, cellphones, smartwatches, or smartphones; models that can access the Internet or have wireless, Bluetooth, cellular, audio/video recording and playing, camera, or any other smartphone-type feature; models that have a typewriter-like keypad, pen- input, or stylus; models that use electrical outlets, make noise, or have paper tape (unless approved by the College Board as an accommodation).
Should you have additional questions, or to register your child for this exam before the registration deadline of September 22, please email lkelly@fultonscienceacademy.org.
Service Learning Club Takes On Additional Campus Beautification Efforts
Sometimes the answer is right in your own backyard! And students decided this is one of those times.
Our new campus is such a wonderful place! It is an important part of our own sense of community. We would like to help make it more beautiful and useful for the FSAPS family. This will be the focus of our service learning this year.
This week, students took a walk around the campus for the purpose of examining the condition of the outside areas. Next, club members will discuss their findings and begin planning how they can best help make our campus a place where we can all learn and thrive. Service Learning Club members can’t wait to get started!
2016- 2017 Student Council Election
It's time to determine the FSAPS Student Council for the 2016-17 school year! Through this process, each homeroom class in grades 4-10 will elect Student Council representatives.
There will potentially be two winners per homeroom. The student with the most votes will most likely (after administrative approval) be the child who will attend the meetings and will relay information to the class. The runner up will assist and potentially replace the other student if necessary.
The one primary representative from each homeroom will need to attend meetings once a week (the day has yet to be determined) at 7:30 a.m.
2016- 2017 Student Council Election Schedule
- Campaign week for student council candidates. Campaign posters can be hung in the classroom. Students can be creative in their campaigning, but should not interfere with learning time and candy or sugary treats are not to be distributed.
September 15
- Student Council candidates need to turn in a copy of their campaign speech to their homeroom teacher for their approval.
September 19 – September 21
- Each candidate should be given time to share their speeches with their homeroom class. Depending on how many candidates are in the homeroom, the speeches can be given through Wednesday during homeroom class time.
- Following the last speech, the students will vote by secret ballot. Ballots will be collected and counted by homeroom teachers. An announcement of all Student Council winners will be made.

Can You Guess, "What IS It?"
Students in Ms. P's creative writing club are working on two very important writing skills! Second graders are learning how to write descriptive paragraphs and complete paragraphs, including an introduction sentences, detail sentences, and a conclusion sentences.
This past week in creative writing, students were given different items or scenarios to describe in a paragraph. Their classmates guessed what each thing was based on their descriptive paragraph.
Our second graders have become great at using describing words and writing complete sentences! They had a fun time guessing "What Is It?"
We love our parent readers!

Mental Math SCOOT!
Students in Ms. P's accelerated Math class have been practicing their mental math skills this past week. Today, they put their mental math to the test when they had ten seconds to solve different math problems!
Students headed outside this morning during the nice breeze and played an exhilarating game of SCOOT! Every ten seconds, students 'scoot' to a new math problem and solved it mentally as quickly as they could.
Students had fun combining some physical exercise activity while also exercising our brains! Ms. P said, "I think these mental math wizards are ready for their test!" :)
An Update on Destination Imagination
Last week, students received further instructions on their projects, which they will work on between now and competition. We look forward to our "Super Study" this Friday, from 4:30 to 8 p.m!

Update on Student Email Accounts
This week, FSAPS announced some changes regarding student email addresses.
Middle school students will no longer be able to send or receive e-mails to addresses outside our school domain. Their school-assigned email address will only allow them to send electronic communications to students, faculty, or administrators who share a fultonscienceacademy.org email address.
High school students will be able to send or receive e-mails both inside and outside our school domain. We expect that our high school students will use this priviledge responsibly.
Safety and security are our paramount concerns. Parents are able (and even encouraged) to check your students' e-mail address anytime you wish. Passwords have already been shared with you. You can also ask your student for his/her password. All students are required to share their passwords with their parents.
Please also be advised that our school administration is always able to check student e-mail accounts when asked, or if necessary.
Through these e-mail addresses, students will be able to receive important school-related emails. Examples include our weekly school newsletter, daily announcements, daily FSA Connect e-mails, and communication from their teachers and fellow students in a much faster and more efficient manner.
Every new academic benefit like this one comes with responsibility. We are confident that our students will use these email addresses in a professional manner as they prepare for life and careers that reward hard work, responsibility and personal and professional accountability.
Please let us know if you have any questions, concerns, or comments.
Thank you for all you do to make Fulton Science Academy a success. We appreciate you greatly.
MEDICAL UPDATE
If it is listed on the registration form that your child has asthma or allergies that require a medical device, you are required to provide that device to the front office immediately. All medicines and rescue devices (inhalers, epipens, etc.) will be locked in the administrative area. Students who have written medical orders to carry their devices with them at all times are able to do so, but an updated, 2016-2017 medical form must be on file with our front office.
As per the FSA Student Handbook, in an emergency situation, the school will phone 911 in any situation where we feel a child's health is in danger and professional medical intervention is necessary.
Please email rcondon@fultonscienceacademy.org if you would like a form sent home with your child. Please note all prescribed medicine forms do need to be signed by a physician.
Private Music Lessons Available - Register Now

GREAT NEWS! INTRODUCING EARLY MORNING MUSIC AND CODING CLASSES
As part of our ongoing quest to make our school a leading STEAM institution in the region, we have been discussing ways to improve the music and computer/coding programs. We are pleased to report that as part of our school improvement plan for the 2016 - 2017 school year, we will now offer early morning music and coding classes. To best support this new initiative, we have added two additional faculty members to our school. These talented staff members include our new orchestra teacher, Dr. Hawk, and our new computer teacher, Ms. Ertekin.
Early morning classes are offered to students in grades five or higher (on an optional basis) and are held between 7:15 a.m. and 7:55 a.m. Thanks to these early morning classes, students will now have the option to take additional classes in the areas of either band/orchestra and/or coding classes before our regular school day begins. We are proud to offer these optional music and coding classes, as they should give an extra “boost” to our already extensive course curriculum.
Please note that while the music classes are open to any student in 5th grade or higher, the coding classes are only open to students in 6th grade through 8th grade.
Students may choose one day of music and two days of coding classes. These optional classes will begin on Tuesday, August 30, 2016.
REQUIREMENTS FOR THE CLASSES
- Students should be in the classroom no later than 7:15 a.m. Students will not be allowed to enter into classroom after 7:20 a.m. because it would be disruptive to the learning process.
- Please note that the teachers reserve the right to remove any student who misses more than three classes in any semester.
If your child is interested in registering for these optional music and/or coding classes, please CLICK HERE to register.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
BEFORE & AFTER SCHOOL CARE PROGRAM

We will have after school club options for each weekday this year. Those who do not attend a club can stay in after school care beginning at 3:30 p,m. For those who are enrolled in a club, the after school care program will begin at 4:30 p,m.

SCHOOL LUNCH PROGRAM
APPLY NOW FOR YOUR 2017 TAX CREDIT
Dear FSA Families,
We are pleased to announce details surrounding the GA Tax Credit Scholarship Program. Applications to participate are being accepted now, and we hope you will choose to participate.
This program provides an opportunity for taxpayers to redirect Georgia tax dollars and, in turn, provide financial aid assistance to FSA students. We would greatly appreciate it if you would please apply and choose Fulton Science Academy Private School as your designated school.
Please also inform your friends, co-workers, and relatives who live in Georgia; they can also participate and help support our school.
How can this tax credit benefit both Fulton Science Academy Private School and myself?
Under this law, you can redirect a portion of your Georgia income tax to provide financial aid assistance to FSA students based upon need. You will receive a tax credit on your state income taxes and a charitable deduction on your federal incomes taxes for the amount of your contribution. For married couples filing jointly, the maximum tax credit-eligible contribution is $2,500 ($1,000 as an individual).
How do I participate in the program?
It’s easy. All you have to do is complete our easy paperless process, and Apogee will submit the paperwork on your behalf. Apogee will process your approval notice within 30 days. Once the approval notice is received, please send your payment by check or pay online within 60 days of your approval date.
Is there a limit regarding how much I can give each year?
Yes, the amount you can give is limited by your tax filing status:
- Married Filing Jointly: Maximum of $2,500
- Individual Filer: Maximum of $1,000
- Married Filing Separately: Maximum of $1,250
- Individuals who receive pass-through income can contribute up to $10k
- C-Corporation: Up to 75% of GA tax liability
Can I direct my contribution to help a specific student?
Although we understand why it would be ideal to designate specific recipients, this is not possible. Apogee does not accept donations that are allocated for specific individuals. Donors would lose their ability to receive a charitable contribution, as well as the Georgia tax credit.
Apogee is a 501c3 non-profit organization and, as such, is bound first and foremost by the rules and regulations governing this special status. As a 501c3, Apogee is not permitted to accept any donations directed to a specific individual. To do so would put Apogee’s non-profit status in jeopardy and, in turn, its SSO status in jeopardy.
Who or what is Apogee?
Apogee Scholarship Fund is a state registered SSO (Student Scholarship Organization) as well as a 501c3 non-profit organization whose primary functions are to facilitate the process of distributing tax credits in exchange for donations and to disburse those funds for private school tuition scholarships.
"Apogee" (ap-uh-jee) is defined as the highest point (typically of an arc). To this end, Apogee strives to help children reach their highest educational potential.
How do I know what my GA tax liability is?
Your GA tax liability is typically 6% of your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI). You can also look at Line 18 of your GA tax return (Form 500) to learn your GA tax liability.
Why should I give now?
The State has placed a yearly cap on the amount of credit available. That amount is $58 million. That means that every school, every taxpayer, and every corporation in GA is drawing from the exact same pool of credits.
Once the funds are distributed, interested agencies must wait until the following year to participate in the program. Once funds are deposited, they are immediately available to assist families who want the best educational choice for their children.
Please note: The yearly cap is generally met on the very first day of January; we expect this trend to continue until the cap is raised beyond the $58 million. For this reason, it is strongly encouraged that you please submit your application as soon as possible to be considered for approval.
Can I reduce my quarterly estimated tax payments by the amount I donate?
This is a great opportunity to write the check to support education instead of paying that portion of estimated taxes. Please ask your accountant to reduce your quarterly estimated tax payment by the amount of your contribution. This will reduce each of your quarterly payments by 25% of the amount you intend to contribute.
What happens if my donation exceeds my tax liability?
The tax credit is a “non-refundable” credit. This means you cannot receive a refund for any more than your GA tax liability. Any excess credit beyond your tax liability can be carried forward for up to five years.
Do I have to include my check with my donation package when mailing to Apogee?
No. Apogee cannot accept payments prior to January 1. Since the vast majority of applications received are early applications, payment should be made after approval has been secured. Payment must be madewithin 60 days of approval.
What is Apogee's Tax ID Number?
FEIN: 26-2693572
Is this donation a charitable deduction on my Federal return in addition to the credit?
Yes. Because of the 501c3 status, you are eligible to receive a Federal Charitable Deduction for the amount of your contribution. The law does require that you increase your State income by the amount of your Charitable Deduction on your Federal return (donation amount).
Can Apogee help me understand how this credit will affect my specific tax situation?
Yes. Apogee is well versed in the specifics of how this credit affects most tax scenarios and is happy to offer guidance regarding how this credit is related to your specific tax situation.
As always, we also suggest that you please consult your personal tax advisor, as they will have the best understanding of your specific tax situation.
