Estrada's E-Notes
Back-to-School Edition
Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year!
At Newport El, we place a high value on CONNECTIONS and COMMUNICATION. That's even more true while we are in distance-learning. Reading this monthly newsletter is one way you can stay connected and informed. I encourage you to regularly read your emails from your teachers, me, and NMUSD. Signing up for The Point is another great way to stay informed and get connected with the PTA and Foundation.
Below you will find information and resources that will be helpful in these first weeks of school. Please look through them carefully so you don't miss anything and reach out if you have questions. We are here to support and serve our students and families.
Keep being awesome!

What's the Plan?
NMUSD has adopted a Re-Opening Plan which includes 3 levels. All NMUSD schools will be starting the school year in Level 3: Distance-Learning on August 24th. While in Level 3, students will be learning from home, interacting with their teacher and classmates via Zoom, and completing assignments in Schoology, a Learning Management System.
Level 3: Distance-Learning is much different than the crisis distance-learning from the spring.
- Expectations for instructional minutes have been set by the state
- Standard grading practices have resumed
- Attendance is required at Zoom sessions
The schedules below are a general outline of what to expect. Your child's teacher will provide a schedule specific to their class.
CONNECTIONS FIRST
Making connections is so important for setting the tone for a successful year, especially since we are not physically at school. With that in mind, Newport El (and all NMUSD schools) will use a modified schedule for the first week of school. Teachers will have morning Zoom meetings with the whole class to build community and then provide independent activities for students to get to know each other and become familiar with the online learning environment. This will allow teachers time to connect 1 on 1 with students and have additional time for professional development training. This schedule will also allow students to ease into the year before we begin our more robust distance-learning program. Our full schedule and core instruction will begin Week 2.
First Day of School
Use the Zoom Meeting ID provided when you picked up your Back-to-School bag and check your email for communication from your child's teacher.
