Orana Catholic Primary School
Term 3 Week 1
Excellence
Our community values an attitude of enthusiastically applying energy and effort to become better learners. Excellence is evident when:
• we do our best to develop our talents and share them with others
• we have high expectations of what we can achieve
• we take risks and experiment with the way we learn
• we work hard to do our best work
• we celebrate our achievements
NAIDOC Week Prayer
God of all creation,
As we journey together in this Great Southern Land,
We pray for healing, forgiveness, and unity,
Creating a path of good will, with justice and compassion.
Jesus, through the power of your love,
You have given us the courage, wisdom, and strength
To share our gifts and talents in humility.
In peace and understanding we reconcile with each other.
Creator Spirit, we come together in prayer and thanksgiving
For the many blessings we have received.
Allow your Spirit to wash over us and give us strength to walk together as one.
Amen(Aboriginal Elders and Reconciliation Church Staff Members)

Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome to Term 3! I hope all community members had the opportunity to have a break and enjoy the time with family and friends. Pausing from our busy lives to take a break is very important. I would like to thank Kathryn Alp for her leadership whilst I was on leave. Kathryn led the school in her caring, dynamic manner, using her experience and drive to ensure the term was finished off to a high standard for the students, staff and community members. This term we welcome four new staff members. Mrs Allison Crugnale joins us in 4 Blue, Ms Temeka Curley in 3 White and Mrs Joanne Martin and Mrs Laura Dindar join our support staff team.
Over the holidays NAIDOC Week was celebrated. NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. Its origins can be traced to the emergence of Aboriginal groups in the 1920′s which sought to increase awareness in the wider community of the status and treatment of Indigenous Australians. It is a time to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, culture and achievements and is an opportunity to recognise the contributions that Indigenous Australians make to our country and our society. The 2022 theme - Get up, Stand up, Show up - aims to support and secure collaborative and cooperative reforms. Students participated in a class liturgy and both indoor and outdoor activities. On Tuesday, at the NAIDOC Assembly we unveiled a new sign depicting the Aboriginal Seasons (see image above) with a relevant native plant. Each year level will learn about one of the plants in Science and will become custodians of that plant in the school grounds. The winners of the art competition were announced at the NAIDOC Assembly on Tuesday morning. Congratulation to all the students for their fantastic effort and for the Aboriginal Perspective Team for leading this initiative.
Many maintenance programs occurred during the holidays. The Year 6 students will enjoy new reverse-cycle air conditioning. Paving, fencing and doors were repaired. New grass was installed outside Year 1, which will be further developed into an outdoor learning space. The Pre-primary and Year 1 students have contributed their ideas, some of which were very interesting. A concept plan for the area will now be developed. Thank-you to the P and F committee that are working with the early years staff on this project. The new OSHC terrace was in use during Vacation Care with the patio due to be installed soon. Thank-you to the grounds, office and other staff for their contribution to these projects that take considerable organisation and planning.
On Monday, our staff started a journey to review and renew our Vision for Learning, in line with the CEWA Vision for Learning, yet specific for our Orana context in 2022 and beyond. Staff worked to bring together current best practice, the needs of our students and personal professional perspectives, as we work together towards consistency and alignment.
Today we welcome back our Year 6 campers. This group of amazing young people had a fabulous time at camp. We cannot express enough thanks to our parent helpers who put their lives on hold for three days to attend camp in wet and cold conditions. Thank-you to the Amy Dreyer, Lynda Packer, Michelle Cottier for their hours of preparation and navigation of changing Covid related camp guidelines. We also thank our Notre Dame student Mr Stephen Jaeger for attending and for his attendance. Kathryn and I had a great time participating in the Year 6 Camp experience.
God bless and take care.

MacKillop House Mass Friday, 29th July 9.30am
School Masses have resumed in the hall beginning from Term 3. It will be wonderful to celebrate together again. We ask that parents wear masks for events such as these. We begin this term with our MacKillop (Blue) House Mass next Friday. This is led by MacKillop House members. It is a time to learn more about St Mary of the Cross, their house patron - our only Australian saint and to pray together by asking for St Mary's guidance as a wonderful role model.
Social Justice Team Plant Sale
After last year's very successful plant sale, we will be holding the event again this term. Money raised will be used to support the Orana staff's ongoing commitment to providing meals for the homeless. If you would like to donate plants, pots or potting mix it would be greatly appreciated. We welcome cuttings as the Social Justice group will plant and cultivate them. Donations can be dropped off at the Year 4 W classroom. The Social Justice Group will care for any plants and cuttings until the plant sale, which will be held on Open Night in Week Six.
Congratulations to Layne on her SUPER SHAVE!
Over the holidays, Layne Blight in 4W shaved her hair off to raise money for the Cancer Council. Congratulations to Layne who raised a whopping $5837. Thank you to everyone who kindly supported this worthy cause. Layne is a very inspirational young lady.
Bully Zero
IT TAKES A VILLAGE
On Wednesday, 27th July 6-7.30pm, parents are invited to attend the following workshop.
The session is aimed at Teachers and Parents and recognises the importance of the whole school community coming together to help recognise and prevent all types of bullying. The session provides understanding of bullying behaviours, how to recognise it and how to prevent it and manage it.

ICAS ASSESSMENTS 2022
The school library will be the venue for the 2022 ICAS Assessments Competition which occur in August throughout Australia and New Zealand. Although not a school assessment, Orana is happy to host the testing program so that students are not withdrawn to go elsewhere and miss a bigger part of their school day here. The school will also prepare the iPads with the latest version of the testing app so the assessments will be trouble-free for the students.
The sitting schedule is from 8 August - 2 September 2022
The subjects tested are English, Writing, Mathematics, Science, Digital Technologies and Spelling Bee. These tests are for Years 2-6 with the exception of Writing which is for Yr 3-6.
We have set up a parent portal with ICAS so you are able to enrol and pay for the testing. If you choose for your child(ren) to participate, please follow the link and use the school access code.

SOCIAL WORKER NEWS
What does NAIDOC stand for?
NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. To understand what all that means though, we need a little bit of a history lesson.
In 1955, the Day of Mourning or Aborigines Day was moved from the Sunday before January 26 to the first Sunday in July. It was shifted because people wanted to focus more on celebrating First Nations cultures rather than protesting.
The National Aborigines Day Observance Committee was then created in 1956 to organise national events.
In 1975, it was decided to celebrate for a whole week – rather than just one day. NAIDOC Week was born! Then in 1991, NAIDOC Week expanded to recognise Torres Strait Islander people and cultures.
And that’s why it’s called NAIDOC Week.
