National Library Week is a time to is a time to celebrate our nation's libraries, library workers' contributions and promote library use and support. The theme for National Library Week 2024 is "Ready, Set, Library," illustrating the idea that in our always-online world, libraries give us a green light to something truly special: a place to connect with others, learn new skills, and focus on what matters most.

Active Minds, Active Bodies
In the midst of jam-packed schedules, finding time for exercise can be a challenge for high schoolers. However, Pennsbury High School libraries are stepping in to make it easier!
Both PHS East and West libraries have recently introduced two desk bikes each, thanks to the support of principal Reggie Meadows. These innovative additions allow students to read or work while staying active throughout the day. With adjustable resistance and the ability to track calories and distance, these bikes are already a hit among students.
Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with students noting how the bikes have helped with focus, and student athletes appreciating the rejuvenating reprieve. Librarians Rita Ann Thompson and Lynn Wambach are thrilled by their popularity and the positive impact they're having on student wellness.
For the Kids by the Kids!
Three cheers for Pennsbury Middle School students who, through their combined efforts, raised nearly $7,000 to help fight the battle against childhood cancer. The money raised by Charles Boehm, Pennwood, and William Penn students will go to Four Diamonds to help cover medical expenses for families with children battling cancer and support a comprehensive team of researchers looking for a cure.
Fostering Future Leaders: Middle School Student Council Leadership Summit
We are thrilled to share the exciting news of our recent Student Council Leadership Summit, where middle school officers from all three Pennsbury middle schools came together for two days of intensive training. Led by Mr. Ron Rolon from the Bucks County IU, alongside the dedicated advisors from Pennwood Middle School - Michele Becknell and Jacqueline Medaglia, Charles Boehm Middle School - Heather Bain, and William Penn Middle School - Melissa Massey and Krista Milewski, the summit focused on crucial aspects of effective leadership such as support, management, public speaking, problem-solving, and goal-setting.
The sessions were a resounding success, with students actively participating in various activities and discussions tailored to their needs. From exploring different leadership styles to honing their communication skills, each participant left with newfound confidence and a deeper understanding of what it takes to be a leader.
One of the most rewarding aspects of the summit was witnessing the growth of their student council officers, not only as individuals but also as a cohesive team. Through collaboration and support, they strengthened their bonds and laid the groundwork for future success.
Heartfelt thanks to Mr. Ron Rolon for his invaluable guidance and expertise throughout the summit. His dedication to leadership development has left a lasting impact on our students, empowering them to embrace their roles with confidence and purpose. We are excited to see the student council officers continue to thrive and make positive contributions to our school community.
This Monday
Dear Pennsbury School Community,
I am writing to address some of the challenges we face in our schools today. I share this information to help us discuss how we can work together to support our students better.
Like many schools, we are seeing an increase in cyberbullying and the inappropriate use of social media on personal devices by students as young as 4th grade. We are also seeing an increase in the use of vapes, vapes with THC (the chemical component in marijuana), and edibles at the middle and high school levels.
What are we doing about it?
In addition to our in-school programming, Pennsbury Parent Academy has partnered with the Pennsbury Education Association (PEA) and the Council for the Advancement of Public Schools (CAPS) to help educate our families about some of these challenges.
On Monday, April 15, at 6:30 p.m., we will show the short film Screenagers Under the Influence - A 70-minute movie that examines the impact of the digital age on teens’ decision-making in relation to substances such as vaping, drugs, and alcohol. The film highlights the changing landscape of the substances themselves, offering solutions for how we can best empower teens as they face decisions about what they will and will not be influenced by.
We will also host a walk-through, “Mock Teen Bedroom,” to help adults identify signs of substance use and trends that put kids at risk, such as cannabis, vaping, and alcohol.
Quick Details:
When: Monday, April 15, 2024
Time: 6:00 pm - Mock bedroom opens at 6:00 pm and will remain open through 8:00 pm.
6:30 pm - Screenagers Under the Influence begins*
Where: Pennsbury High School East Auditorium (705 Hood Boulevard, Fairless Hills) (Please note this presentation will not be recorded or live streamed.)
I recognize that these topics can sometimes be difficult to discuss, but we are committed to addressing the issues facing our students and our schools. We are working hard to improve every aspect of the educational experience in Pennsbury, and we appreciate your continued support of our mission.
Sincerely,
Thomas A. Smith, Ed.D.
Superintendent of Schools
*Due to our agreement with the producers of the film, we cannot stream this movie online.
March MATHness at Fallsington
Fallsington Elementary School participated in a month-long March MATHness program. Students in every grade level completed a math fluency mad minute each week. Students practiced their math skills and improved their average weekly. As a culminating activity, the school came together to shoot some hoops. High-scoring classrooms shot foul shots against their teachers to celebrate March MATHness! Congratulations to Mrs. Yates’ first-grade on having the top class average for the second year in a row! Way to go!
GOAL!!!!!
Afton Elementary School had a special visit this week from the Philadelphia Union and their mascot Phang! The team's youth coaches shared their knowledge and skills with the students, sparking excitement about soccer. The students had the opportunity to show off their skills in a mini-competition during the assembly and at recess. The coaches also gave out Union t-shirts to students who participated in grade-level goal-scoring competitions. Of course, the highlight of the event was meeting Phang! Thanks to Afton Physical Education teacher Ryan Sodano for arranging the Union's visit, as well as the Union's youth coaches, Lisa Cotter, Union Youth Program Coordinator, and Phang!
Branching Out with Lynne Cherry: A Day at Eleanor Roosevelt
Renowned author Lynne Cherry recently visited Eleanor Roosevelt Elementary School, a much-anticipated event funded by a collaborative effort from the Pennsbury Arts Foundation, ER's PTO, and Title 1. The visit was inspired by the school's focus on Cherry's acclaimed book, The Great Kapok Tree. The story focuses on a man who falls asleep while attempting to cut down a giant kapok tree in the Amazon rainforest. As he slumbers, various animals approach him, whispering their reasons for why the tree should be spared. Through their voices, Cherry conveys the interconnectedness of all living things and the importance of preserving the rainforest.
Leading up to Cherry's arrival, the school's reading specialist, Alisa Myles, and art teacher, Dana Hoffman, joined forces, with the help of students, to visually capture the essence of The Great Kapok Tree. They collaborated on a remarkable project, crafting a stunning tree sculpture from recycled materials adorned with artwork created by the students themselves. This collaborative effort brought the story to life and highlighted the importance of environmental conservation and creativity.
Cherry's visit was eagerly anticipated by students and staff alike, offering a unique opportunity for them to interact with the author firsthand. Through engaging presentations and discussions, Cherry shared insights into her writing process, the inspiration behind The Great Kapok Tree and her other books, and the significance of environmental stewardship. Her visit not only enriched the students' understanding of literature but also fostered a deeper appreciation for the natural world around them.
Soaring for a Cause: Eagles Autism Challenge at Quarry Hill
Quarry Hill Elementary School raised approximately $1,200 for the annual Eagles Autism Challenge, scheduled for May 18, 2024.
The school-wide event originated last year with student Nicholas Marone and his parents, Courtney and Lou, who were in attendance again this year. Philadelphia Eagles Autism Ambassador and Benergy1 founder Ben Hartranft also joined in on the fun!
For the third consecutive year, Nicholas and his parents have embarked on a personal journey in the Eagles Autism Challenge. This year, their collective efforts have resulted in a staggering $9,200. Their involvement in the challenge was sparked by a life-changing event-Nicholas' autism diagnosis at the tender age of two. It was then that Courtney, his mother, found solace in a Facebook group called Mothers Solving Puzzles, a community of mothers with children living with autism. She called the group her "lifeline."
"Mothers Solving Puzzles is a Facebook group my good friend, Megan Peppel, created to help Bucks County parents with all the intricacies of what we go through with having a child on the spectrum. Our team, Mothers Solving Puzzles, is currently at $ 72,000, and we are in 2nd place out of over 300 teams. We are right behind Jason Kelce's team, which is obviously way ahead in 1st place. So, to raise that much money already while we are all still helping out our kids to their IEP meetings, speech therapy, etc., is just truly amazing! So proud to be a part of this amazing group and part of the Eagles Autism Challenge."
April is Autism Awareness Month. Throughout this month, Pennsbury aims to raise awareness, promote acceptance, and foster understanding of autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
William Penn Cheerleaders Perform at Afton Assembly
The William Penn Middle School Cheerleaders were so thrilled to attend Afton Elementary’s April assembly. As students entered the gym, they were greeted with impressive stunts and tumbling performed by the cheerleaders, getting the students ready for an exciting assembly. The cheerleaders then created a pom tunnel for Afton’s Blue ribbon winning Reading Olympics team to enter through!
In addition to showcasing their skills, the cheerleaders emphasized the importance of being respectful, responsible, cooperative, and safe, aligning with Afton's Core Four! The Afton students were so excited, high-fiving and cheering on the cheerleaders! It was the perfect way to end an awesome week! Keep a lookout for where the cheerleaders will show up next!

A SWAP Meet, short for "Swap and Share" or "Stuff We All Possess," is a great way for people to exchange gently used items they no longer need for things they can use or want. These events are environmentally friendly and promote sustainability by reducing waste and promoting the reuse of items. Here's how a SWAP meeting typically works:
- Gathering Items: Participants gather items from their homes that are in good condition but are no longer needed or wanted. These items can include clothing, toys, household items, books, and more. The idea is to bring items that someone else might find valuable.
- Sorting and Display: When you arrive at the SWAP meeting, items are usually sorted into categories and displayed in an organized manner. This makes it easier for participants to find what they're looking for.
- Giving and Getting: Participants can either give, get, or both. If you have items to give, you can place them on designated tables or in specific areas for others to take. If there are items you need or want, you can browse through the items brought by other participants and take what you need.
- No Money Exchange: The key principle of a SWAP meeting is that no money is exchanged. Everything is based on the principle of sharing and swapping items freely.
- Unclaimed Items: After the SWAP meeting, any unclaimed items are often donated to local charities or organizations, ensuring that even items that weren't swapped find a useful purpose. You can take it to the nearest location and support another person by donating any items you have left.
SWAP meetings are a win-win for both individuals and the environment. They promote recycling and reusing, reduce waste, and provide an opportunity for community members to connect while helping one another. It's a great way to declutter your home and acquire items you need without spending money.
We hope you can join us. If you would like to join us, click here and complete the Google Form.
