Simile
Simile: A figure of speech used to compare two things with the use of like or as.
"Your beautiful mouth was moving like a caterpillar (Christopher 10)."
Personification
Personification: A figure of speech where human qualities are given to animals, objects or ideas.
"My eyes could get lost up there if I left them looking long enough (Christopher 70)."
Metaphor
Metaphor: A figure of speech comparing two things without the use of like or as.
"...and tiptoed to the utility closet...I was at the bottom of the sea.... I was in the belly of a ginormous dark creature (Christopher 74)."
Hyperbole
Hyperbole: A figure of speech that exaggerates a situation for effect and is not meant to be taken literally.
"A small desert had settled inside my mouth (Christopher 119)."

"I sipped again. It burned my throat like sunburn, only inside instead of out this time (Christopher 200)."
