Bonneville Elementary School
October 2020
Welcome Principal Culley!
We look forward to working with you, Mr. Culley!
Happy National Custodian Day October 2!
Welcome to the Virtual Classroom
Mrs. Davis' Art Class
Visit the link below to see the online bulletin board for all the awesome art everyone has been making this week.
To start off the year in Art, the whole school created artwork based on this theme.
Students used our color check-in chart to help choose colors that express emotions they have been feeling lately.
Mrs. Bell's Science Classroom
- Kindergartners are learning about Roly Polies.
- Younger grades have also been learning about the needs of living things and have had quite a few classroom visitors like an amazing Jerusalem cricket!
- 3rd graders have been learning about life cycles and so I raised fruit flies with them!
- Structure and function for 4th graders has been a fun topic! 4th graders are also learning about the many ways animals sense and analyze their environment.
- 5th graders are learning about the 4 systems of earth...We did a lesson on the hydrosphere. 97% salt water, 3% fresh. If we break down the fresh water...69% is frozen, 30% is ground water and inaccessible, 1% is surface water that we can use.
- 6th graders are learning about interactions in ecosystems and they got to see a snake eat some goldfish during a lesson!

Mrs. Leys' 3rd Grade Class
Third graders in Room 102 have been busy writing letters every week as part of our Pen Pal Program. We're 3 weeks in, so already they've written to their teacher and to two other classmates. Every Wednesday when students come to Bonneville, they drop off a letter that they wrote to a friend and they collect a letter that a friend has written to them! This weekly activity encourages students to write for an authentic purpose, consider an audience when writing, practice the critical parts of a friendly letter, and work on their handwriting. So far, it's been a big hit!
Mrs. Warren's 4th Grade Class
In 4th grade science lab, Ms. Bell has been teaching about an organism's structures that aide in survival. Using what they've learned, students in Zoom Room 204 presented about a creature of their own creation and explained its structures and functions. Mrs. Warren and her students were very impressed with the diverse creativity and fun presentations.
5th Grade
5th Grade had our first online Trivia Party on Sept. 18! Students played on teams of 4 made up of representatives from all three classes, and answered 6 questions each for 3 themed rounds. We're excited to play again soon now that we've worked out some of the bumps!
Mrs. Anderson's 6th Grade Class
Students in Ms. Anderson's Writing Class have been working on Backward Poetry. Based upon the following poem called "Our Generation" by Jordan Nichols, the poem is first read from top to bottom...but then the poem is turned around starting with the last line to the first. Give it a try and then see some of the great Backward Poems presented by sixth graders!
"Our Generation"
by Jordan Nichols
Our generation will be known for nothing.
Never will anybody say,
We were the peak of mankind.
That is wrong, the truth is
Our generation was a failure.
Thinking that
We actually succeeded
Is a waste. And we know
Living only for money and power
Is the way to go.
Being loving, respectful, and kind
Is a dumb thing to do.
Forgetting about that time,
Will not be easy, but we will try.
Changing our world for the better
Is something we never did.
Giving up
Was how we handled our problems.
Working hard
Was a joke.
We knew that
People thought we couldn’t come back
That might be true,
Unless we turn things around

“Covid Impact”
by Ruby Weir
At home
Doing online school
We are learning on a computer
Learning in the best way we can
Earthquakes and windstorms
All year round
Covid impacted us without a sound…
***********************************************************
“School”
by Madeline Rigby
School can be fun,
You have your ups and downs.
School can be not fun,
But at least we are learning so we can move on.
The world is spinning round and round…
*********************************************************
“Nature”
by Ginger Johnson
Nature is not beautiful
Never will anybody say
I had fun outside today
Mountain bikes are extreme
That's true
Skiing is cold
I hate that, too,
When people say nature is not beautiful…
***********************************************************
“Ugly”
by Madelyn Morris, Sienna Neilson, and Nora Stevens
I am ugly
And no one can tell me
I’m pretty
I will lie to myself
It's true…
************************************************************
“The Universe”
by Skyler Madsen
The universe will end someday
I hate it when people say
The universe is pretty cool
I think
Shooting stars and planets are lame
I don't think
Astronomers are right
We are all wrong…
************************************************************
“Pokemon”
by Audrey Tingey, Jonas Caldwell, and Otis Waltman
Pokemon
Pokemon is dumb
Never will anybody say
Charizard has a purpose
We will always say
Pokemon is fun…
***********************************************************
“Friends”
by Ciel Park and Kathryn McMahon
I am lonely
It is a lie that
Friends are necessary
I believe that friendships aren’t everlasting
Stop saying that
Happiness comes from friendships
I never doubt that
My life is great without friends
I will never agree that
Friends are important to me…
Counselor Corner
The first week of school, all students learned about the Sale Lake City School District's policy on Bullying, Harassment, and Retaliation. Families are encouraged to read the district policy which is posted in the link below. Students learned that bullying, harassment, and retaliation are not allowed at Bonneville or at any SLCSD school. Students also learned to Recognize, Report and Refuse bullying and any of the above concerns. Students reviewed how we must Report concerns to a trusted adult at school or at home. Students listed trusted adults as teachers, the school principal, school counselor, and recess guard. Trusted adults at home include parents and guardians, adult relatives, adult neighbors, coaches, and our friend's parents.
Fifth and sixth graders also learned about the SafeUT app that can be used to anonymously submit tips in case of bullying, harassment, or retaliation along with many other concerns. Learn more about the Safe UT app at the link below.

Fun Run Wednesday, October 7!
The PTA is excited to sponsor this event and fundraiser with a few changes. Instead of students asking for donations door to door and competing for prizes, this year for our fundraiser we are asking students and families to purchase Bonneville t-shirts and masks. Students can also get “sponsors” by asking family and friends to donate directly to the Bonneville PTA. Every student participant will get a swag bag and a treat at the finish line!
Our 2020-2021 PTA
Hi there! Glad you are here. We hope you find a place with us at Bonneville and with our PTA.
This school year has started differently than any other but what remains the same is our desire to keep our community connected and involved, regardless of circumstance. We hope we can do that with your help! We already have the beginnings of a great team of volunteers who want to help make this happen, and we hope to have more. Please feel free to reach out to us. We would love your input and support.
Go Bobcats! We belong to Bonneville!
