March 2016
Principal's Note
This month we are wrapping up our mClass testing for students in kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grades. Watch for your child's mClass reports to come home next week. We are also completing the first round of ISTEP+ tests, and the IREAD 3 this month. I am so proud of the effort that the students have put forth on the first round of ISTEP+ tests!
I'm excited to inform you that our construction project will begin in the near future! Our project will begin with the new gym addition, which will be located where our current playground is located. During the next year, we will not have access to our playground, however, students will have a fenced outdoor area to run, play team sports, or just enjoy the fresh air. Rest assured that student safety is our priority. There will be specific construction locations that are secured, and all personnel will have an identification badge that is clearly visible. In the coming months and over the summer, the teachers and I will be working on preparing our classrooms to be mobile, as we prepare for a year of flexibility and patience. We know our sacrifices now will be well worth our beautiful school in the end!
I hope everyone has a wonderful and relaxing Spring Break later this month!

Early Dismissal Action Plan
Thank you for all of your cooperation during the early dismissal last week due to the snow storm. During registration you were prompted to select a means of transportation for your child should such an early or emergency dismissal need to occur. If you would like to update or change the way your child is to go home during an early or emergency dismissal, please contact the school secretary to do so.
Kindergarten Round UP
Kindergarten Round-Up is coming soon! If you have a student starting Kindergarten next year, or know someone that does, spread the word and provide them with this information.
Each elementary school will offer two identical meetings for roundup. Please choose the one that best fits your schedule. Children, who are entering Kindergarten in the fall of 2016, and their parents, must make arrangements to attend one of these sessions. During the meeting, all students will be given an assessment.
Kindergarten Round-Up for Cooks Corners Elementary is:
Friday, April 15, 2016 from 9:15 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. or 1:15 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Prior to roundup, complete registration information online at www.valpo.k12.in.us, select the PARENTS tab; then select Kindergarten Registration; and, then select Cooks Corners Elementary. Complete all information and submit. You will also be able to see the list of items that are required to be presented at Kindergarten Round-Up.

Arts-A-Budding Art Show Winners
Congratulations to the following students for having their artwork chosen for the 41st Arts-A-Budding art show at Valparaiso University.
Cayden Steighner, 2nd grade,
Thomas Krueger, 3rd grade
Addie Nagel and Analise Sarver, 4th grade
Note from the Nurse
This is a reminder that we have many children at Cooks who have serious nut allergies.
If your child's teacher allows snacks eaten during the school day, they must be chosen from the Healthy Foods List which you received the first week of school. It was on a sheet titled 'Procedures for Healthy Eating in Our School". It did include peanut butter crackers, which I would greatly discourage because of allergies.
Should you need another copy of this handout, please let me know and I'll send one home with your student.
