Holiday of the Month
by Phoebe Adams
As spring arrives, so does a very profitable holiday; Easter. I’m sure many of you are aware that Easter is a Christian Holiday meant to commemorate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. However, today Easter is characterized by bunnies and eggs, which doesn’t make much sense considering the context. Today, I will share with you the origins and evolution of Easter.
Originally, Easter was a pagan holiday that honoured the spring equinox. When Christianity became more widespread, the holiday became associated with the resurrection of Christ and subject matters of life and birth. More spring events and customs originated during this time and all seemed to stick with those themes.
The name for Easter in most European countries originates from the Jewish Holiday of passover. Despite this, Germany and English speaking holidays were inspired by the Anglo-Saxon Goddess, Eostre or Ostara. This Goddess represented spring and Easter and inspired holidays like the German holiday Ostern.
As for the eggs, chickens, and bunnies, there is a quite simple, however not immediately obvious. The eggs symbolize birth and the coming of life, playing into the previously mentioned themes of Jesus’ resurrection The bunnies symbolize fertility because bunnies have lots of kittens in when they give birth.
Over time, different aspects were added to the holiday and now it is what we celebrate today.
