Purpose of HIVE/New HIVE phone & device policy
Purpose of HIVE:
HIVE serves as a dedicated intervention period aimed at providing tailored support to students. This structured environment allows our staff to foster meaningful connections with students while offering additional assistance, enrichment opportunities, and the chance to catch up on assignments.
During HIVE, it is essential that students remain focused on instructional and academic activities. Beginning in the 4th quarter (4/2/24) the use of phones, headphones, earbuds, or AirPods will not be permitted during HIVE unless explicitly authorized by the teacher for academic purposes. Any unauthorized phone usage will result in confiscation and referral to the office, in accordance with our Electronic Device Usage policy.
Students eligible for the HIVE incentive may use their phones upon reporting to the theater or library. However, if these students decide to stay in HIVE, once they enter HIVE, phone usage will not be allowed. This policy ensures that all students maximize their time for academic engagement and growth during HIVE sessions.
Reminder of the Device Usage Policy per the Student Handbook (page 17)
ELECTRONIC DEVICE USAGE
Cell phones and other devices are allowed in the building. The USE OF AN ELECTRONIC DEVICE AT SCHOOL IS A PRIVILEGE. This privilege can be revoked at any time. Devices can be used in between classes during transition times. However, devices should not be used in the following areas at any time:
Classroom (unless authorized by teacher)
Restrooms
Locker rooms
Theater
Office
Students may not record or photograph any other student or staff member without their permission and/or knowledge. Any photos or videos taken in an illegal manner will be reported to the proper authorities and may result in school discipline. Classroom usage will be determined by the classroom teacher. A sign will be utilized to distinguish if device usage (other than Chromebooks) is permitted in a classroom at any specific time. Students who are unable to follow the device usage policies and procedures will face the following consequences:
First offense: verbal warning,(& a minor referral)
Second offense: contact will be made with the parent/guardian, and the device will be sent to the office. Devices can be picked up by the student at the end of that school day.
Third offense: teacher issued lunch detention and contact will be made with parent/guardian. Device will be sent to the office and can be picked up by the student at the end of that school day.
Fourth offense: a written final warning will be sent home.
Fifth offense: loss of the privilege to have an electronic device at school.
ONCE A STUDENT LOSES THE PRIVILEGE TO HAVE AN ELECTRONIC DEVICE, ANY FURTHER INFRACTIONS WILL LEAD TO ADMINISTRATION HOLDING ON TO THE DEVICE UNTIL A PARENT/GUARDIAN CAN COME TO THE SCHOOL TO PICK IT UP. CONTINUING TO VIOLATE THIS POLICY COULD RESULT IN SUSPENSION.
**Failure to serve any punishment could result in a court referral, social probation, loss of driving privilege, revocation of parking permit, or any other punishment that administration deems fitting.
EOC Dates
We will be running a two-hour delay schedule on the days marked by bold print. Students scheduled to take an exam on a given date will need to arrive at school at their normal time in order to make the first-period bell at 7:40 am. Students who are not scheduled to take an exam should arrive at school in time to start their day at 9:40.
Mount Vernon buses transport students for the entire district, not just high school students, therefore buses will operate on a regular school day schedule. Dropping off a little after 7:00 am and picking up after the last bell at 2:35 pm. If a student depends on a school bus to arrive at school in the morning, they will arrive at the normal time and will report to a designated area on days they are not scheduled to test.

Immunizations for Juniors
Parents/Guardians of current 11th grade students,
The State of Ohio law requires all students to have a Meningococcal ACWY (MCV4) vaccine before entering 12th grade or they will be withheld from school until the requirements are met. If your child has already had this vaccine, please disregard this message. If your child has not yet received this vaccine, or other school-required immunizations students can receive their immunizations at the Nationwide Children's Hospital School-Based Health Center. Click here to indicate your interest in your student receiving the immunization at the Nationwide Children's Hospital School Based Health Center and a member of their team will be in contact with you to schedule an appointment. Appointments can be conveniently scheduled during the school day during a time that limits an interruption to their learning. There are also times available outside of the school day and they will be open throughout the summer.
If you do not choose to participate in the immunization clinic please make sure your child receives their vaccines before next school year. You can visit the following locations to get the immunizations:
- Your child’s doctor/healthcare provider, call ahead for verification
- The Knox County Health Department Immunization Clinic, call (740) 399-8008 to make an appointment
- Local pharmacies often provide them for ages 13 and up, please be sure to call ahead for verification
There are two exemptions to the state law:
- If your child has a medical condition that prevents him or her from receiving the vaccine, a statement from the student’s health provider (Immunization Exemption Form) is required and must be provided to the school.
- If you object for good cause including religious reasons, fill out the Immunization Exemption Form by clicking the link or by stopping into the school office. The form must be signed by a parent/guardian and turned in to the school office.
Governor's Art Exhibition
Over the past weekend, the regional judging for the Governor's Art Exhibition took place, with a total of 507 artworks submitted from our region. Mount Vernon High School is pleased to announce that three of our students have been selected to advance to the next round of judging. Alexis Cook, a 12th-grade student, Jasmine Beutel, an 11th-grade student, and Kennedy Howard, a 10th-grade student, each had one artwork selected for further consideration. This upcoming weekend, their artwork will undergo further evaluation to determine if it qualifies to be among the top 300 pieces from across the state. It is noteworthy that only 95 pieces advanced from our region, making this achievement a significant honor for our talented and creative students.
Junior Achievement Inspire Event
Juniors and seniors from our Career Based Intervention program attended the Junior Achievement INSPIRE event this week at the Richland County Fairgrounds. This event, put on by Junior Achievement of Ohio, featured around 75 vendors from surrounding counties that were on site to showcase their businesses and search for employees. Students had the opportunity to not only network with employers, but all of the booths were very hands-on.
Featured booths included industries surrounding manufacturing, utility services, engineering, education and training, healthcare, etc. Mr. Savage, the high school’s CBI instructor said, “This event was truly one-of-kind. Our students really enjoyed themselves and learned a lot in the process. They acted as weather reporters, did drywalling, grouting, performed linemen duties, assembled pumps, as well as performed healthcare duties. Many of our students thrived in this environment today and it was awesome to see! The benefits of students interacting with employers, talking about benefits and wages, as well as the hiring process is invaluable at this stage of their lives.” See pictures below (if you want to add any pictures).
On Friday, April 19 and Saturday, April 20, MVHS Drama will present Disney’s Freaky Friday in the MVHS Theater. Join us for this pop-musical retelling of Mary Rogers' beloved novel.
