Open Response in Math, Grades 2-10
Strategies, assignments and informal assessments that show deep understanding and make learning visible.
About the Presentation:
The Common Core Standards call for shifts in instruction that build both fluency and deep understanding in math. The standards demand that teachers engage students with “a dual intensity” of practice and understanding. But how to do this? This workshop will quickly review strategies presented in earlier workshops (How Did You Get That? and What’s the Problem?) and then present authentic assignments and rigorous activities that will motivate and engage students to think, write, and present solutions. There will be a focus on open response questions as well as informal “in the moment” assessments that make thinking visible. Teachers who took an earlier workshops with Bill Atwood will have the opportunity to review, develop, and deepen their use of the strategies as well as learn new ones. However, no prior experience is required and all are welcome.
