Easy as Pi!
Pennsbury schools all across the district celebrated National Pi Day on March 14 (3.14). Check out "just a slice" of the learning, fun, and creativity that was had below!
Fallsington Elementary
Fallsington fourth and fifth grade advanced math students visited kindergarten, second, and third grade classes to read aloud a Pi Day book to the students. Fourth and fifth graders also created Pi Day posters to show the younger students the relationship between the circumference, diameter, and the irrational number Pi. Second and third graders created a Pi Day chain with the first 50 numbers of Pi. Many circular treats were enjoyed by all students to celebrate!
Penn Valley Elementary
Students at Penn Valley celebrated Pi Day with many activities throughout the day. Students measured different sizes of circle objects. Students were amazed to discover that every circle, no matter what the size, has a ratio of the circumference to the diameter of 3.14!
Students could also purchase the opportunity to “pie” Principal Hidalgo and Math Specialist Amanda McDowell at a special Pi Assembly, organized by Mrs. McDowell. Mrs. Schluchterer and the Student Council sold raffle tickets for a chance to throw the pies. The Student Council also sponsored Coins for a Cause by collecting coins throughout the week in a friendly competition between homeroom classes. All of the money raised will benefit St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
Quarry Hill Elementary
Quarry Hill students graphed the frequency of the first 100 digits of Pi, rolled the digits of Pi with dice, measured the circumference and diameter of household items to get as close to Pi as possible, created Pi Poems...and more! Students also held a friendly competition to memorize the digits of Pi, and their winner memorized the first 52 digits!
On Thursday, March 14, 2024, Pennsbury held a Special School Board Action meeting. The purpose of this meeting was architect discussion and finalization of the selection process. Click the video below to watch the full meeting.
5th Graders Perform at Pennsbury Elementary Honors Chorus Festival
On March 9, 2024, 5th-grade students from all 10 Pennsbury elementary schools joined together for the annual Pennsbury Elementary Honors Chorus Festival.
Select students were chosen from each elementary school to participate in this special event. Based on the student population size at each building, the groups came together to make a chorus of over 100 students. Each 5th-grader practiced with their music teacher at school, as well as independent practice at home, to prepare to work with their guest conductor, Mr. Tom Shelton.
The honors chorus concluded the festival with a performance for family and friends that afternoon. Bravo to our 5th graders!

Fallsington Welcomes Author Marie Schneider
On March 8, 2024, author Marie Schneider visited Fallsington Elementary School in honor of Read Across America week. She read a book from her popular series, Football Freddie & the Fumble Dog, to all of the students. What made the visit even more meaningful is Marie's deep connection to football; her grandfather, Leonard Tose, was a former owner of the Philadelphia Eagles football team and a founder of the Ronald McDonald house.
In addition to being an author, Marie is also a CEO, speaker, philanthropist, dog rescuer, and life coach. Students were eager to hear her stories and ask questions about her life. Fallsington's PTO purchased copies of Football Freddie for each classroom. This event was organized by Reading Specialist Sheila Miley and Secretary Jennifer Pringle. Click here to visit Marie's website and check out her other books.
Students Engage in Fire Safety Initiative at Charles Boehm
Thanks to the Lower Makefield Fire Company, led by Chief Tim Chamberlain, and the Pennsbury Partners Program, Family and Consumer Science Teacher Meredith Williams, along with her partner Marnie Hagerty, successfully acquired fire blankets and handheld fire extinguishers for all the FCS kitchens across the district.
Chief Chamberlain delivered an engaging presentation on kitchen safety, complementing their curriculum and reinforcing vital safety measures. The students actively participated in the presentation, showcasing their enthusiasm and curiosity by asking insightful questions.
Then, everyone collaborated to create a visual "do's and don'ts" fire safety wall displayed outside of the FCS kitchens, promoting a culture of safety awareness within their school community.
Authentic Learning: ER Kindergarteners Explore Indian Culture
Kindergarten students at Eleanor Roosevelt Elementary had a delightful visit from Mrs. Rupali Pathak, a 4th-grade teacher at Afton Elementary and a parent. Mrs. Pathak's visit aligned with their social studies unit, focusing on understanding the world, particularly Asia and India.
Returning to Mrs. Baccari's classroom with her daughter Aanya, Mrs. Pathak continued a cherished tradition she once did with her older daughter, Shriya. The session included a fascinating discussion on mendhi (henna) application, followed by a craft where each student decorated their own mendhi handprint.
The highlight was a mesmerizing dance presentation that captivated the young learners, providing them with an authentic and engaging insight into Indian culture. Mrs. Pathak's dedication and effort in creating this enriching experience are truly appreciated by all.
Generous Donation of Gowns for Cinderella's Closet
Cinderella’s Closet at Pennsbury High School received a generous donation of 20 stunning prom gowns from Giana Rose Couture, a local business in Yardley, PA. Giana Rose and her employee, Pennsbury student Ava Jones, personally delivered these beautiful gowns to campus, sparking immense gratitude from the PHS community. Students were thrilled to be able to choose from brand new options from the popular local boutique.
Cinderella's Closet, an organization entirely managed by Pennsbury High School students, offers formal attire including dresses, suits, shoes, and jewelry at no cost to fellow students. This initiative thrives on the generosity of our community members and local businesses like Giana Rose Couture, whose contributions ensure that every student can shine on their special day.
William Penn Cheerleaders Visit Penn Valley
The William Penn Middle School Cheerleaders brought energy and excitement to Penn Valley Elementary during their monthly assembly. As students entered, they were greeted by a lively pom tunnel and impressive stunts performed by the cheerleaders, setting the tone for a spirited event.
In addition to showcasing their skills, the cheerleaders emphasized the importance of respectful, responsible, and safe choices, aligning with Penn Valley's core beliefs. The Penn Valley students were thrilled and couldn't contain their excitement, cheering loudly with each impressive stunt. Throughout the assembly, the cheerleaders' contagious enthusiasm and constant smiles added to the memorable experience for everyone involved.
Philly Union at Fallsington
Fallsington Elementary had an exciting visit from the Philadelphia Union on March 6 as part of their Philadelphia sports-themed Read Across America Week.
Coaches from the Philadelphia Union organization joined the students during recess, sharing soccer skills and handing out official Philadelphia Union shirts to each child.
Special thanks to Reading Specialist Sheila Miley and Secretary Jennifer Pringle for arranging this memorable experience for the students and staff. It was a fun-filled day of learning new skills and enjoying quality time with the Philadelphia Union coaches.
Manor's Mini-THON Glow Dance
Manor Elementary School hosted an unforgettable Mini-THON Glow Dance, illuminating their dedication to raising funds for Penn State's Cancer Fundraiser. They transformed their space into a vibrant glow, resonating with lively music and the collective spirit of the community rallying for a vital cause.
Amidst the glowing lights and lively decorations, Manor Elementary showcased the power of unity and support for those impacted by cancer. This event transcended ordinary festivities, symbolizing a profound gesture of hope and solidarity for cancer research and patients alike.
Career Exploration at Penn Valley
At Penn Valley Elementary, second-grade students delved into learning about community helpers. Throughout the week, they researched various professions they aspire to in the future.
For their final presentations, students had the option to dress up as, create a poster about, write a paragraph describing, or decorate a person-cutout representing their chosen community helper. The roles they explored included doctors, veterinarians, police officers, teachers, construction workers, and a marine biologist.
The students' efforts were impressive, reflecting their keen interest in understanding the roles that contribute to our community's well-being.
The Entire Pennsbury Community is Welcome to Participate!
A SWAP Meet, short for "Swap and Share" or "Stuff We All Possess," is a great way for people to exchange gently used items they no longer need for things they can use or want. These events are environmentally friendly and promote sustainability by reducing waste and promoting the reuse of items. Here's how a SWAP meeting typically works:
- Gathering Items: Participants gather items from their homes that are in good condition but are no longer needed or wanted. These items can include clothing, toys, household items, books, and more. The idea is to bring items that someone else might find valuable.
- Sorting and Display: When you arrive at the SWAP meeting, items are usually sorted into categories and displayed in an organized manner. This makes it easier for participants to find what they're looking for.
- Giving and Getting: Participants can either give, get, or both. If you have items to give, you can place them on designated tables or in specific areas for others to take. If there are items you need or want, you can browse through the items brought by other participants and take what you need.
- No Money Exchange: The key principle of a SWAP meeting is that no money is exchanged. Everything is based on the principle of sharing and swapping items freely.
- Unclaimed Items: After the SWAP meeting, any unclaimed items are often donated to local charities or organizations, ensuring that even items that weren't swapped find a useful purpose. You can take it to the nearest location and support another person by donating any items you have left.
SWAP meetings are a win-win for both individuals and the environment. They promote recycling and reusing, reduce waste, and provide an opportunity for community members to connect while helping one another. It's a great way to declutter your home and acquire items you need without spending money.
