Student Focused-World Class
Word for the Warrior..
Hello Warriors,
Many of you are familiar with Carol Dweck, author of the bestselling book, MINDSET. When I think about the hard work that our JSMS staff has been doing as we set the vision for our Sevier learning community, I can't help but think of Dweck's research regarding the importance of embracing a GROWTH MINDSET.
We, at Sevier, all choose to work at Sevier because we believe that our work matters. We believe that we are difference makers. We believe that we have the power to change the trajectories of lives. This is powerful and meaningful work.
Having a growth mindset requires that we live out the mantra that we have for our students. For many of us, it's easy to embrace the truths that we matter...and that we are difference makers. However, in order for us to move from words to actions, we must DREAM BIG. Dreaming big requires that we TAKE RISKS. Dreaming BIG demands that we focus on what CAN BE rather than focus on our current reality. If we don't focus on the WHAT IFS…if we do not make decisions based on a compelling vision of what CAN BE, then we will never grow as a school, student performance and learning will not grow and the lives of our kids will not improve.
Our mindsets directly impact the decisions that we make for our school, in our classrooms and for our students. As educators, it is IMPERATIVE that we embrace a GROWTH MINDSET as we work to support our students and to be difference makers for our kids.
Fixed Mindset: The belief that skills and intelligence are set and that people have them or they don't; the belief that people are just naturally good at things and others are not; and that people are not in control of their abilities.
Examples:
I can't
My kids can't
Looks at the here and now and makes decisions based on what they see
Main focus on performance and immediate results
Achievement means more than effort
Growth Mindset: Belief that skills and intelligence are grown and developed; belief that people who are good at something are good because they built that ability and that people who aren't good at something are not good because they have not done the work to be good; the belief that people are in control of their abilities
Examples:
I can learn to do that
My kids are not there YET
My kids can with support
Looks at the potential of what CAN be
Main focus is the process of growth and getting better
Mistakes are learning opportunities. Effort matters most in learning
I am proud of the work that we are doing at Sevier. I am proud of the work that I see teachers and instructional assistants doing every day to support students that just doesn’t happen at every school. I see teachers embracing change for the sake of our kids.
- You are embracing inclusive classrooms so that EVERY child is given an opportunity to learn in the least restrictive environment.
- You are embracing rigorous standards and the work that is required to support students in achieving those standards.
- You are embracing collaboration among colleagues because you believe that together, we stronger than we are alone.
Please take time to watch the clip below regarding MINDSET. This research will serve as our foundation as we work in collaborative planning meetings, in our vertical meetings and in the decision making that takes place in Leadership Team meetings.
You are doing the hard work... of doing the RIGHT work... and it matters for our students. It will make a difference for our kids! DREAM BIG.
Proud to be a Warrior,
Holly

ADMINISTRATIVE BULLETIN
Additional Information on Local EOC Data Embargo
Last week, Commissioner McQueen sent an email to directors with next steps regarding local EOC data. This data will be publicly available—meaning the embargo will lift—on Aug. 30. In the meantime, you may share your data under embargo with your district leaders, school leaders, and EOC educators. Also during the week of Aug. 28, EOC score reports (examples here and here) will be uploaded into Nextera/ServicePoint and school-level TVAAS evaluation composites will be available on the accountability application. After the Labor Day holiday, district- and teacher-level TVAAS for grades 3–8 and high school will be available on the accountability application.
We will provide additional information next week regarding the next steps for accessing score reports on the Nextera/ServicePoint platform and a specific timeline for when the EOC score reports and TVAAS data will available. As a reminder, grades 3–8 achievement reports will be available later this fall.
