Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington was an American Composer, Pianist and bandleader of jazz orchestras. His career spanned over 50 years, leading his orchestra from 1923 until death. He was born on April 29, 1899 in Washington D.C. He died on May 24, 1974 in New York City, NY.

- His Family were descended from slaves. His parents were both pianist and encouraged him to learn music and play the piano.
