Notes From the Office
Grade 4-6 Options: We are excited to announce something new to our Gr.s 4-6 students at Christina Gordon this year. Our Grs. 4-6 students will be given the opportunity to choose and participate in an OPTIONS class. This class will be for one hour each cycle at the end of Day 5. Students will be asked to choose their Options from the list provided (Digital Take Home Folder). While the student will actually choose their Options during classtime, it is suggested that you take a few minutes in advance to discuss this with your child so that they can make the best decision. A couple of things to keep in mind:
- Because space is limited, students may not get in their first choice. Students will be asked to identify their second and third choices as well. Our hope is that each student will get one of their first three choices.
Options will be done in two blocks, with the first one starting on September 28th and ending in late January. The second round begins in early February and will run until May.
Students who don’t get their first choice in round one may have the opportunity to do it in round two.
Because this is for one hour a cycle, we will not be able to entertain requests for students to be placed together in their Options.
Please note that because our PEAK Basketball students are already participating in an optional activity, they will not be able to choose from the Options listed. In fact, our Options will be offered at the same time that one of our PEAK Basketball classes are run.
CGSF Popcorn Days: We are gearing up for another successful fundraising year with Popcorn Fri-yays. Popcorn is $2.00, and we aim to have popcorn delivered to classrooms before 10:30 am on Friday. Last year popcorn days provided approximately $7 000 to our Fundraising Association. As our student population continues to grow, we know the support is needed more now than ever. We are working with our Hot Lunch ordering platform to hopefully have popcorn orders streamlined through that, for families who wish to do so. If you have any questions: please email Barb (cgsfundraising@gmail.com).
Special Days Magnets/Buttons: The Inclusion Advisory Committee has Special Days magnetic calendars for sale! They have all the division dates on them as well as some special days that the Inclusion Advisory Committee would like to acknowledge. They are $5 each and can be purchased through Mrs. Power. The Inclusion Advisory Committe also has a limited supply of packages containing 7 buttons and 5 ribbons that can be worn on these special occasions. The button and ribbon packages are $10 each and can be purchased by sending and email to karla.power@fmpsd.ab.ca to pre-order.
Athabasca Tribal Council: The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation which is observed annually on September 30th, falls on a Saturday this year. Through discussions with Indigenous partners, notably the Athabasca Tribal Council, a collective decision was made to hold a community gathering and walk on Thursday, September 28th at Kiyām Community Park. Commemorating this day on September 28th ensures that education and awareness is as widespread as possible, opening opportunities for local schools and youth to be involved.
The gathering begins at 10:00 am at Kiyām Community Park with a prayer, the inaugural raising of the Survivors’ flag and a brief address before walking the designated loop through downtown. After the walk, light refreshments will be provided at the park with an opportunity for community members to learn, listen, and reflect on the importance of the day. The gathering and walk are held in partnership with the Athabasca Tribal Council.
Ignite Program: The Ignite Program is starting on October 3rd. Ignite is a FREE program for all children in Fort McMurray ages 9-12. It is facilitated by Big Brothers Big Sisters Wood Buffalo and happens in the Justin Slade Youth Building at 10500 Morrison Street, from 6:00 pm-7:30 pm every Tuesday, from October 3rd-November 14th. Group size is limited, and registration is required. Contact Shaelynn at gmcwb@bigbrothersbigsisters.ca. Light snacks are provided. Students are free to bring their own snacks if they wish. Please see attachments (Digital Take Home Folder) for more information
Hot Lunches: Ordering will be open from the 1st to the 20th of each month to order for the following month. Please note that there is no hot lunch ordering for ECDP or Kindergarten students. To open your 2023/24 hot lunch account (the system does not retain information from the previous year), follow the detailed instructions provided in the attached graphic (Digital Take Home Folder). When you log in, you may notice a new button to volunteer for hot lunch. Please consider volunteering to help sort and organize hot lunches from 11:30 am-12:30 pm. If you have any questions you can contact our hot lunch team at: cgshotlunch@outlook.com.
