Telegraph
Delievering news since 1832
How It Began
By 1838, Professor Morse had presented his idea to the U.S. Congress. Although not the first person to think of the idea (62 others had claimed to invent the first electrical telegraph), Morse was the first to get political backing for the telegraph and a business model for making it work.
Slowly Spreading
In 1843, Morse built a telegraph system with the financial support of congress from Washington D.C. to Baltimore. In 1844 on May 24, the first message, "What hath God wrought?" was sent. The telegraph system was slowly progressing. Many attempts failed to make the system work for the entire country.
Finally, Morse extended the telegraph line to New York. At the same time, many companies had begun to take notice of the telegraph's impact and opened their own systems in other parts of the country. Western Union built its first transcontinental telegraph line in 1861.

The innovations to the telegraph are many. In 1876, the telephone replaced the telegraph. Both had the same purpose, but the telephone was faster and easier to operate. On April 3, 1773, the first mobile phone was created, then the smart phone. Its final major innovation is the text message, first sent on December 3, 1992.
