Eagle News
SME newsletter for families and the community
I hope this message finds you well and filled with the spirit of spring! As we approach Earth Day on April 22nd, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the significance of this global observance and share some exciting plans we have in store at Six Mile Elementary.
Earth Day serves as a reminder of our collective responsibility to cherish and protect our planet. It’s a time to celebrate the beauty of nature and to consider the impact of our actions on the environment. At Six Mile Elementary, we believe in nurturing a sense of environmental stewardship in our students and fostering a culture of sustainability within our school community.
This year, we are thrilled to announce a series of special activities and initiatives to honor Earth Day:
1. Campus Clean-Up: On April 22, we will be organizing a campus clean-up event where students, and staff can come together to beautify our school grounds. This hands-on activity not only helps keep our environment clean but also instills a sense of pride and responsibility in caring for our shared spaces.
2. Environmental Education: Throughout the week leading up to Earth Day, our teachers will be incorporating lessons and discussions focused on environmental conservation and sustainability into the curriculum. From exploring the importance of recycling to learning about endangered species, students will have the opportunity to deepen their understanding of environmental issues.
3. Community Engagement: We invite our Six Mile Elementary families to join us in celebrating Earth Day beyond the school walls. Whether it’s planting a tree, participating in a local clean-up effort, or simply spending time outdoors appreciating nature, there are countless ways to make a positive impact in our community.
4. STEAM night: The focus of STEAM night is Our Big Beautiful Earth. We invite all of our families to come out on Thursday night between 6 and 7:30. We will have the Critter Keeper, STEAM activities in classrooms, food, games, entertainment and more.
Thank you for your ongoing support, and let’s make this Earth Day one to remember!
Warm regards,
Melissa Terry

Building Character at SME
Each month at Six Mile Elementary, we focus on different character traits and talk about ways to show those traits to others. We discuss the trait in morning meeting in our classrooms. We spotlight the trait on the school news show. Mrs. Orr, our guidance counselor, goes into classrooms and does special lessons with the trait. At the end of each month, we have a Best of the Nest party to honor those students who "shine" in that area.
This month, our word is PATIENCE.
PATIENCE is being willing to wait for something you want now.
It's Not Too Late to Enroll Your Child at SME for next year!
Absence Notes
If your student is absent, you have three days to send a note stating the reason for their absence before it is counted unexcused. You can send a handwritten note or you can email Stephanie Merck at stephaniemerck@pickens.k12.sc.us. You can also email your child's teacher.
When students have accumulated 3 absences in a row without a note, Mrs. Plyler will have to schedule a meeting for an Attendance Conference. Please make sure to get your note in so that this does not happen.
