COLEDALE NEWSLETTER
Term 1 Week 11
Principal's Report
Dear Parents and Carers,
This is our last newsletter before a well deserved 2 week holiday. Kindergarten and their families have thrived in their first term at school, even joining us for a whole school excursion to Symbio! Many new families have become part of the Coledale school community.
Our Year 3 and 5 students recently completed their NAPLAN assessments during weeks 7 and 8. Parent interviews were attended by many parents. Speaking to teachers in person is encouraged rather than long emails or Seesaw messages. You are encouraged to contact your child’s teacher at any time throughout the year to discuss their progress or any concerns you may have.
Our recent "Burgers & Basketball" event was a huge hit again, over 150 burgers were consumed, and we were delighted to see 140 father figures and children enjoying the evening on our school grounds. A big thank you goes out to our dedicated teachers who cooked all of the burgers and planned this event.
Upcoming Events:
· Cross Country event on Wednesday, April 10, with a P&C sausage sizzle. Parents are warmly invited to attend.
· Our last assembly for the term will be on Wednesday, April 11, featuring a performance by Mrs. Dixon's 5/6 class showcasing their recorder skills.
· Anzac assembly will take place on the last day of term, Friday, April 12.
I hope that everyone has a relaxing break, students return to school on Tuesday April 30.

Primary Schools Drama Ensemble
This Term Yolanda auditioned for the Primary School Drama Ensemble at the Art Unit in Lewisham. After 2 rounds of 2-hour auditions, Yolanda had a call back for a second audition and out of 150 Students made it into the year six drama ensemble. Well done Yolanda!
Basketball and Burgers
Our Fathering Project - Burgers and Basketball event was another top evening! From the court to the grill, the night was filled with laughter and camaraderie. Kids teamed up with their special male figures, showcasing their skills and creating memories. Conversations flowed, cheers echoed, connections strengthened and as tradition seems to go it eventually turned into a game of soccer. Thank you to you all for supporting the project, looking forward to next term's event!
Wollongong Art Gallery Excursion
Our Trip to the Wollongong Art Gallery - By Alice, Addison and Ada 5/6
On the 12 of March, 2024, the 5/6 classes of Coledale Public School went to the art gallery in Wollongong. We took the train to Wollongong Station and walked all the way to Wollongong Art Gallery.
With our tour guides, Sharon and Julie, our main focus that day was pottery. First we explored all of the meaningful exhibitions by Mai Nguyễn-Long titled ‘Kôgábịnô’ or ‘Vomit girl’ and discovered the story behind these pieces of pottery. We learnt that the vomit girl was a character that Mai Nguyễn-Long made as a metaphor for her feelings, and her relationship with her culture.
We got the chance to make coil pots with Julie using air dry clay. We started with a flat circular base and then rolled the clay into a worm-like shape no smaller than a thumb width. Then we attached the coils to the pot using watered down clay or ‘slick’. We repeated this process until the pot was then desired shape. Once we had finished the pot we were able to decorate them with the leftover clay.
Our adventure to the gallery was an amazing learning experience, and I am so glad our teacher organised it!
Whole School Symbio Excursion
On March 6 the entire school travelled to Symbio Wildlife Park for the day.
Students had a great day exploring the park, feeding farm animals, meeting reptiles and learning about some amazing animals.

Kitchen Garden News
All students have been enjoying the outdoors and connecting with nature in our gardens. Students have been busy rebuilding the garden beds ready for out Autunm / Winter crops. Building our large compost, pruning, caring for the chickens and caring for our worm farms. They have planted beetroot, snow peas, spring onions, broccoli, silver beet, lettuce, cauliflower so far in our garden.
It is great seeing so many families being involved in our kitchen garden program. I would like to thank the parents and grandparents who are helping in the garden classes, the families that brought in cardboard and items for our compost and the families who have been helping care for the chickens over the weekends. Your help and support is wonderful and greatly appreciated.
There are always new jobs and projects coming up in the garden, so if you are interested in helping, please see Joanne Chilton. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Upcoming jobs we need help with:
Volunteers to care for the garden and chickens over the coming school holidays. (If you can help, please contact Mrs Chilton with the dates you are able to help with and you will be added to the school holiday roster.)
Help moving mulch to create our native bee garden and mulch our gardens.
Build garden boarder for the native bee garden.
If any parents/grandparents can help with any of these jobs. Please see office or Joanne Chilton. email: joanne.chilton@det.nsw.edu.au
