Kindergarten
August 16th
Wednesday
Thursday
Thursday began with PlayDoh and a Question of the Day. We needed to take care of our lunch orders for the first time. It took some time, but we did a great job! We completed calendar together at the carpet and then were ready for a bit of fun. At our tables we played Balloon Bounce. It was so much fun to work together with new friends to keep the balloon in the air! We focused our instruction and activities around the book, The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn. In the story a little raccoon is nervous to start school, so his mom kisses his palm and tells him that he just needs to touch his cheek to feel her love while he is at school. We shared our own feelings on the first day by writing how we felt, there were some pictures to help identify some feelings, sad, excited, nervous, and excited. We learned that it is okay to have any or all of these feelings. We worked to create our own kissing hand to remind us of our parents' love while we were at school on our first full day.
We explored some math manipulatives at our tables before getting ready for lunch. After lunch, we relaxed with a read aloud before heading to Music and PE to meet Miss Clark and Mrs. Weber. Back in the classroom, we finally got to play! We had been asking about the grocery store and puppet theater since Wednesday morning. We got a chance to play with new friends at many different areas in the classroom. Some of our choices were the grocery store, puppet theater, Legos, marble run, blocks, coloring, and Candyland. We did a great job cleaning up and got ready to go home.
Friday
1. Walk in a straight line
2. Look straight ahead
3. Keep hands by your side
4. Turn off voices
5. Use quiet feet
We practiced these rules and did a great job so we earned a point toward a class reward on our class goals chart. We headed outside with our snack for snack and recess. When we returned to the classroom, we learned about classroom expectations by reading David Goes to School and No, David. We discussed good choices and bad choices in the classroom, lunchroom and on the playground. We completed a good choice/bad choice sort. The teachers were thrilled to see how many students correctly identified the good choices from the bad choices. As a class, we decided that we would make good choices in kindergarten this year!
After lunch, we listened to a story before going to Music and PE. We joined both classes outside to play a game called Rabbit Hole. We had to work with our team to balance a hula hoop on three cones. Then, while holding hands, we needed to get in the rabbit hole without knocking it over. Our day ended with play, clean up and a read aloud. We are looking forward to more fun next week!
Reminders/Information
Daily Folders - We will begin sending home daily folders on Monday. Please check and empty the folder each night.
Snack - Please remember to pack a HEALTHY snack each day. Snacks should be a bag or small container of fruit, vegetables, or cheese stick. Students should not be bringing chips as a snack. We will ask them to save it for their lunch if they bring something that is not healthy. We want to ensure that students do not confuse their lunch and snack. If you could remind your child what their snack is and if they should have hot or cold lunch it would help tremendously.
Milk - If you would like your student to have milk with their lunch from home, please send a quarter in their lunch box. They can put their quarter in the bucket and grab a milk during lunch if they need one. If your child gets a hot lunch from school, milk is included and you do not need an additional quarter for milk.
Please let us know if you have any additional questions.
