Dear Families,
I have enjoyed the opportunity to visit with many of you at our recent family activities including Fall Carnival and Family Reading Night. I know your children are more important than anything in your lives, but it is always a good reminder for me to see children with their families – to see the smiles and the love and the care. Seeing families together gives me a renewed sense of the great importance of the work we do with and for children. I look forward to seeing you next week during Parent-Teacher Conferences on Oct. 24th-26th. Attending these are a great way to be involved and help your child succeed.
A parent-teacher conference is a great opportunity to:
- Discuss your child’s progress
- Share your child's strengths and needs
- Work with the teacher to help your child do well in school
We look forward to partnering with you as we both have the same goal: to help your child succeed in school. If there is any way that I can be of assistance, please let me know.
In addition to helping your child succeed in school, another goal of ours is to keep them safe. School safety includes practicing for the unthinkable. Last month we had our first fire drill. We were able to evacuate almost 700 people in 6 minutes, 50 seconds. This month on Oct. 18th we will hold our first earthquake drill as we join the Great Washington Shakeout on Oct. 18th at 10:18. We will practice drop, cover, and hold in our classrooms. In November, we will practice evacuation as it relates to our ALICE (Active Shooter) training. We hope this feels no different for students than a fire drill evacuation. Details are still being formed on date, time, and where the evacuation centers will be. Information will be shared as soon as we have it.
Thank you for entrusting your children to us each and every day.
Warmly,
Bridgit Reichel

The LaPorte Report in Physical Education
Physcial Education: We have finished up our unit on throwing and catching. The older kids progressed to using footballs while the younger ones used larger rubbery balls. The kids are working hard on proper throwing technique. Fourth and fifth graders took their first Plicker test to check their knowledge of the throwing cues we have been going over. Next up is fitness baseline scores, studying bones, jump ropes and hula hoops!
WAVES: Our football games are going strong! We have one more week of games to go. Students have been great sports by helping and encouraging each other. Keep it up!
Dolphin Laps: Our school is up to 200 miles so far! Remember we are trying to get 3,000 miles school wide so get on those running shoes and get moving!
Mrs. Nichols' News
Hello Vinland families!
I just wanted to update you all about what I’ve been doing during specialist time with our fabulous kindergarten, first and second and third graders. Since school started, I’ve been working with our fabulous counselor, Carolyn Mosiman, to teach each kindergarten class about Kelso’s choices for problem solving. You might have seen an art project come home with Kelso’s choice wheel on it. These are the choices we encourage to solve small problems at school. With all grades, I am currently working with each class on a variety of social-emotional skills and skills for learning through the Second Step curriculum. We’ve talked about what respectful listening looks and sounds like, using self talk to ignore distractions, and being assertive to ask for what you need in a respectful voice. Some days, we practice belly breathing to help calm down. In the coming months, we will also work on recognizing emotions using facial expressions and talk about helpful ways to deal with big feelings. I hope that students can use these skills in various situations throughout the day, both at home and school. We also play fun games with memorizing phone numbers, doodle dancing and listening concentration. These may look like fun games, but they are scientifically based Brain Builders designed to help kids learn memory skills! Shhh! Don’t tell your kids! I enjoy each one of your kids and hope that you can encourage these skills at home as well.

Read On!
Book Fair is currently underway, running through October 19th in the Vinland Library from 9:00am to 4:15pm every day. Reading is the most important skill a child can lean so come update your home library with books your kids will love! Doing so will also benefit Vinland Elementary. Win-Win! There is also an opportunity to pre-order the new book: Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Meltdown for just $8.99.
Emergency Prepping
Vinland’s Emergency Preparedness will be here on Thursday, November 15th. This is our annual event where kids, 1st through 5th grade, help prepare hearty and dry lentil and rice packets. These healthy rations are stored at Vinland for use in case of an emergency. Unused packets from the previous year are then used by the local volunteer group, Children of the Nations, to help feed hundreds of children in third world counties. We’re looking for more volunteers this year — please consider helping for a shift. Contact Champee with questions at thesalls@yahoo.com and look for sign up emails.
Join the Vinland PTSA
