What Does This Quote Mean??
In Act 3Scene 2 of Hamlet, queen Gertrude is asked what she thought about the p;ay, The Mouse trap. " Lady Doth protest too much, methinks." Tone of her response angers Hamlet in a way. The quote basically means, one can insist so passionately about something not being true that people suspect the opposite of what one is saying. If we analyze further we would see that the word protest means something entirely different then than now. "When someone denies something too much and too often they're usually lying. They've done whatever it is they're accused of and trying to cover their tracks.
