LeeAnn Saavedra, Miller, PE AAII Fall 2014
Who was/were the leaders in its creation?
Ted Shawn, Isadora Duncan, Loie Fuller and Ruth Denis were its first creators.
When was it created?
There are 3 different eras of when it was brought up or made with changes during each era. The first era began in 1880, and ended in 1923. The second era began in 1923, and ended in 1946. Finally, the last era began 1946, and ended in 1957.
Where did it evolve?
Isadora Duncan began developing modern dance and its different movements in America, but was not encouraged here, so she later moved to France.
Isadora Duncan
She thought that ballet was ugly and meaningless gymnastics. She was one of the first dancers to experiment with dancing other than ballet.
Loie Fuller
Was a former burlesque dancer and developed dance movements with lighting equipment and silk costumes.
Ruth St. Denis
Was influenced by Japanese dancer Sada Yacco and actress Sarah Bernhardt, and created different dances describing the Indian culture and mythology.
