March 8, 2023 - NEWSLETTER
Westwood Families,
Spring break for students is a day away! The final day of the trimester is tomorrow. Final grades for this second trimester will be posted in Campus on Friday, March 24.
There is no school Friday, March 10 through Monday, March 20. We’ll see students back at school on Tuesday, March 21.
Congratulations to our musical performers and tech crew for “Frozen Jr.” I heard many comments from staff and the community on how much they enjoyed the show.
Students in grade 8 art completed self-portraits using their fingerprints and shading. The portraits are hanging up in the locker bay. They are amazing to look at and are just as unique as the individuals. See image below.
Have a great break! I hope each of our families finds some time to spend together, relax, and connect.

Principal
Vision screening coming soon
The health office will be conducting vision screening for 7th graders, March 21 and 22. This year, we are excited to partner with the Spring Lake Park Lions Club. They will be bringing trained volunteers to use a vision spot screener to screen students for potential vision issues. If you do NOT want your child to participate in vision screening, please call the health office, 763-600-5304 by March 9, 2023.
Lost & Found donation!
Westwood's lost and found table in the cafeteria has grown in the past few months. We have a large number of sweatshirts, jackets, hats, lunch boxes, water bottles, etc. that are still waiting to be claimed. Please remind your students to look for their missing items as soon as possible. Items that are not claimed by the start of our spring break on March 10 will be donated.

And the winners are...
Today, Westwood students have chosen a winner of the Black History Month Door Decorating Contest!
We had a TIE on the Intermediate side, so we have two winning classrooms: Ms. Rivera's class and Ms. Olson\Ms. Golanowski's class!! These winning classrooms will get pizza tomorrow.
On our middle school side, Ms. Bachman's class was the winner! They will also enjoy pizza tomorrow.
Congratulations to our winners and thanks to all the classrooms who participated and voted!
Honor Band Festival
On Tuesday, February 28, eleven Westwood Middle School students represented Spring Lake Park Schools at the University of Minnesota Duluth Junior High School Honor Band Festival. These students rehearsed and performed music that was learned that day along with students from 50 other schools around Minnesota and Northern Wisconsin, under the batons of UMD professor Dr. Mark Whitlock and nationally known composer/conductor Robert Sheldon.
Spanish Immersion
Mr. Waldon and Mrs. Delgado, middle school teachers, visited 6th grade Spanish Immersion and shared information about the classes the students would take in 7th grade Juntos and American Studies in Spanish. The students asked great questions and are very motivated for the Spanish Immersion classes next school year.
Bees and Pollination
Mrs. Ganske's 1st hour class learned about bees and pollination from Dr. Melanie Kazenel (NCSU and Rocky Mountain Biological laboratory). Some new facts students learned include:
- there are 20,000 different types of bees
- bees come in all sorts of colors and sizes
- male bees come from unfertilized eggs and female bees from fertilized eggs
- many bees can sting multiple times
