The Georgia Statewide Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) Network named Columbus State University’s Competitive Premedical Studies program an example of best practices and resources related to pipeline recruiting at its 2016 Primary Care Summit on May 4. The summit focuses on how to best meet the growing demand for primary care physicians in Georgia.
The program was outlined as part of a presentation of the Pipeline Segment in the Educational Life of a Health Professional, a division of the Georgia Statewide AHEC Network.
CSU’s Competitive Premedical Studies program prepares undergraduate students for medical school by connecting students with local physicians, offering free MCAT preparation and providing guidance on medical school applications and interviews.

COLUMBUS, Ga. — During a spring break expedition to the Amazon, a scientific team from Columbus State University collected the first-ever flowering samples of a new tree species in Ecuador’s Yasuní National Park.
The discoverers were Samantha Worthy, a master’s student in CSU’s Natural Sciences Program; Kevin Burgess, professor of ecological genetics in CSU’s biology department, and botanist Alvaro Pérez, a professor from Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador (PUCE) in Quito and CSU’s 16th annual Elena Diaz Verson Amos Eminent Scholar in Latin American Studies. Pérez also serves as the curator of angiosperms (flowering plants) in PUCE’s world renowned herbarium.
Carson McCullers Center announces 2016 writing fellow
The Columbus State University Carson McCullers Center for Writers and Musicians has announced the 2016 Marguerite and Lamar Smith Writing Fellow.
Award-winning author Melissa Pritchard is the 11th recipient of the competitive fellowship named for McCullers’ parents.
Each year, the fellow resides and writes from September to December in the McCullers Center, 1519 Stark Ave., the childhood home of the celebrated late writer. The fellowship is designed to afford the recipients an uninterrupted period of time to dedicate to their work.
McCullers Center director Nick Norwood explained in an email to the Ledger-Enquirer why a panel of CSU writing professors chose Pritchard among more than 40 applicants for the Columbus fellowship: “Melissa has an impressive record of publication, her writing sample was outstanding, and she is working on a novel set in Georgia so living and working in the Smith-McCullers House was a perfect fit.”
Columbus State wins Peach Belt title
The Columbus State baseball team has been hammering opponents all season.
So in the game in which the Cougars won the outright championship for the Peach Belt Conference, it was only fitting that they scored 20 runs and had nine extra-base hits, four homers and five doubles.
The 13th-ranked Cougars (39-10, 23-6) beat UNC Pembroke 20-2 on Saturday at Burger King Stadium. The Peach Belt title is the program’s third PBC championship, but the first since 2008.
Soccer icon Brandi Chastain wows packed crowd at CSU
COLUMBUS, GA.
Columbus State alum Chelsea Person marveled at the size of Thursday’s capacity crowd at the Country Club of Columbus.
When Person walked to the podium as one of the speakers at the second annual Girls in the Game Advance Initiative event, she couldn’t hide what a thrill it was to see all the young faces in the audience of more than 300 people.
“If you were here last year, you are probably looking around thinking oh my this blew up!” Person said.
Person, a recent member of CSU’s soccer team, co-founded the event as an intern with the athletic department last year. The goal of initiative was to raise funds and spread a message of empowerment for the university’s female student-athletes.
CSU hosts ribbon cutting to launch student radio station
COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Columbus State University held a ribbon cutting ceremony for the official launch of their radio station.
Thursday morning's event was held on 9th Street in front of the Carpenter building.
Organizers shared how excited they are for the new campus radio station.
“This radio station is just a natural fit where we teach the courses, they understand the theory but they also have this venue now where they can practice what they’re learning in class,” Dr. Danna Gibson said, CSU’s Communications Department Chair.
