The boy's death, causing Eliezier to lose faith
WHY DID THE BOY'S DEATH HAVE SUCH AN IMPACT ON THE JEWS AT BIRKENAU?
The other boys that were pipels were cruel, but he was different. The boy was kind and all the jews loved him. His death was heartbreaking to the Jews because it was one less person that had their back in a way. Also, he represented hope and goodness, so when he died, everyone felt hopeless and betrayed by God.
Concentration Camp
(a network of German Nazi concentration camps and extermination camps built) This is where Eliezer stayed.
The Boy's Death
People at the camp said the little boy was like God and his death represented the death of hope. People felt hopeless when Jesus died, but then 3 days later he rose again; in the same since, Eliezer felt hopeless in this chapter, but at the end of the story he makes it out alive.
The Kapo's Secret
One of the Kapo's asked Eliezer to keep his relationship a secret in turn for extra soup.
CHARACTERIZATION
Eliezer changes from slightly hopeful and numb to pestimistic and emotional. He mentions how his faith is carrying him through the situation throughout the story. He also lacks compassion for the deaths at the camp because they're so common. The climax in this chapter is when the well-liked young boy dies. Eliezer begins to lose the hope that he got from God and started to feel bad for not appreciating the little things (ex. the soup.)
