Featuring Mike Mattos
Mike Mattos is an internationally recognized author, presenter, and practitioner who specializes in uniting teachers, administrators, and support staff to transform schools by implementing response to intervention and professional learning communities. Mike co-created the RTI at Work™ model, which builds on the foundation of the PLC at Work™ process by using team structures and a focus on learning, collaboration, and results to drive successful outcomes.
He is former principal of Marjorie Veeh Elementary School and Pioneer Middle School in California. At both schools, Mike helped create powerful PLCs, improving learning for all students. In 2004, Marjorie Veeh, an elementary school with a large population of youth at risk, won the California Distinguished School and National Title I Achieving School awards.
A National Blue Ribbon School, Pioneer is among only 13 schools in the US selected by the GE Foundation as a Best-Practice Partner and is one of eight schools chosen by Dr. Richard DuFour to be featured in the video series The Power of Professional Learning Communities at Work™: Bringing the Big Ideas to Life. Based on standardized test scores, Pioneer ranks among the top 1 percent of California secondary schools and, in 2009 and 2011, was named Orange County's top middle school. For his leadership, Mike was named the Orange County Middle School Administrator of the Year by the Association of California School Administrators
RTI at Work™ Creators
Austin Buffum and Mike Mattos are recognized worldwide for their expertise in implementing RTI in a variety of settings, often with limited personnel and dwindling resources. Their collective experience will empower you to build your own timely, targeted, and systematic intervention program to impact student learning.
The RTI at Work™ model builds on the foundation of the Professional Learning Communities at Work™ process by using team structures and a focus on learning, collaboration, and results to drive successful outcomes. The authors emphasize that all students must have access at Tier 1 to essential grade-level curriculum and highly effective instructional practices to prevent most learning struggles.
In addition, a school must provide increasing targeted supplemental (Tier 2) and intensive (Tier 3) interventions for all students needing additional support to master the academic skills, knowledge, and behaviors required to succeed in school and beyond.
RTI at Work™ is defined by four essential guiding principles:
- Collective responsibility is a shared belief that the primary responsibility of each member of the organization is to ensure high levels of learning for every child.
- Concentrated instruction is a collaborative process that focuses teacher teams on the skills and knowledge most important to the student and his or her future.
- Convergent assessment is an ongoing process of collecting targeted information to add depth and breadth to the understanding of each student’s individual needs, obstacles, and points of learning leverage.
- Certain access is a systematic process that guarantees every student will receive the time and support needed to learn at high levels.
