How School Used To Be
Holly Creek, Beehive, and HGS By Foster Schwarz
Fred Conard
My great-grandfather, Fred Conard, went to a one room country school, called Holly Creek. It was very different than my school, Hoxie Grade School . Holly Creek was warmed by coal, all the grades were in one room and taught to by one teacher. There were no buses and some kids rode horses to school. Here is a picture of the inside and the outside of Holly Creek.

Beehive
My great-grandfather Fred taught in a country school called, Beehive. This is a picture of it.
Differences
Many things have changed since my great-grandfather went to school. Here are some pictures of some differences. They include lunch containers, school bells, desks, and writing surfaces.
My great-grandfather's tin lunch container.
My Cat in the Hat cloth lunch bag.
My great-grandfather's brass school bell.
This is the electronic bell my school uses.
This is how a desk looked. I thought it would open. It didn't.
This is my desk. It opens.
Kids would have worked on a surface like this, called a slate.
I use an ipad.
The Bells
The school bell my great grandfather used and the one my school uses today sound very different. Here are two videos of me demonstrating ringing the bells.
